Two Users Can't Play At Once

I haven't played BF2 in several months - last time I played, my friend and I could both log in at the same time and connect to the same games no problem.

I've just patched up to 1.4, and now whenever I log in, my friend loses connection.

I have a netgear router, and my machine is in the DMZ, my friends is not. I have set the router up so that the ports mentioned for Battlefield 2 on Portforward.com are open for him.

He can connect and play fine until I lot in - as soon as I reach the server selection screen he loses connection.

Have they stopped allowing two people from the same IP to play, or is there something else I need to change?

AFAIK you couldn't have two users logged in to begin with - certainly not in the same server. am i wrong?

We both own the game - it is a different (legitimate, purchased brand new - not even pre-owned or anything) install / serial key on each computer.

We both even re-installed to make sure that the boxes hadn't got mixed up or anything, they are definitely different serial keys.

We have an account each, and are logging in using that account.

It wasn't a problem several months ago - we were almost never on the same side (presumably because of the servers auto-balancing the teams when people log in) but it never stopped us.

As it stands, as soon as I get to the lobby, it boots him out of the game.

Its always him that gets booted, not me (If I'm already logged in and he logs in afterwards, he connects to the game, gets the squad / gear selection screen, then gets dropped), so I'm assuming its something to do with the router?

So you are both at the same location, with one PC on the DMZ and one plugged into one of the LAN ports? Then yes, it's something in the router configuration. Do you need to be in the DMZ? It typically gets treated differently than the trusted LAN ports. As a test, try plugging your system into one of the lan ports also and see if his connections stays up. Are you trying to be a server and him a client, or are you both trying to play online to a random server out in the world somewhere?

I'm in the DMZ because some proprietry software I use for work doesn't work very well behind a router and came with next to no documentation. I'm chasing the IT people to find out what ports I need open, but in the mean time it seemed easiest just to use a software firewall and be in the DMZ.

I'll try what you've suggested though and see what happens.
