I had a similar problem, after patching with the incremental 1.4 patch my game worked one day, the next it didn't... I patched over it with the full 1.4 patch, now it is fine! EA...

I'm having the same problem.
full patch to 1.4 screen goes black ctd...
reinstall game to full 1.3 install works fine.
Now trying the 1.3 to 1.4 incremental seeing how this goes....I thought they were supposed to fix the ctd's with this patch??? ....no expansion packs installed, just installed windows 2 weeks ago.

x2 3800 (tried setting single and dual affinitys)
Sapphire x1800xt 256mb
1gb ddr500 g.skill (I know it's 1 but runs 2142 all high no AA 70fps) (run 1.3 at the same fps with 2xAA)
250gb sata2 hdd
hiper 580w modular psu

these kinds of problems after all these patches are fuel for the ea/dice bashing threads.

UPDATE! not sure what fixed it but I changed my background and installed the 1.3-1.4 inc. and it works.

I didn't do anything to my background, just patching over the 1.3-1.4 incremental with the full 1.4 patch got everything working again.
