BF2 won't load up

Got a new 300GB SATAII Hard Drive so I decided to do a complete format and fresh install of XP to get the most juice out of it I could.

Well...it worked with the exception of BF2 not working.

Everything else works, even other high requirement graphics games (Civilization IV specifically). I installed BF2, full patched it to 1.4 from EA Downloader, then when I ran it it would bring up the splash screen, then the screen would go black, then it would be back on the desktop with no programs running.

I repatched it, no change.

I uninstalled it, restarted, reinstalled it, restarted, patched it to 1.4, no change. I uninstalled it again, restarted, then just reinstalled 1.0 or whatever was on the BF2 DVD and tried again with no dice.

I went into Catalyst Control Center and made sure that the refresh rate override was not on (I also tried it with it on as well).

I have to assume it is a graphics issue...but since other graphics games work it must be something wonky with BF2. How do I do a complete uninistall and get all the registry entries and such? I really don't want to do another XP load.

Here's my specs:

EPoX 9NPA+Ultra NForce 4 (6.86 drivers)
AMD 64 3000+ Venice
300 GB Seagate SATAII HD
2GB PC3200 DDR Dual Channel
WinXP with all updates and patches
DirectX 9.0c
ATI X800 XL 256MB (ATI 6.8 Drivers)

I'm experiencing the same exact problem. I have a Pentium D930 3.0 Dual Core with 7600 and a gig of ram. My game was running great until i installed 1.4 and now it just shows the splash screen, the screen goes black, then it goes back to desktop.

edit: i'll put more detail in. I did a fresh install and installed the 1.4 full and it still wont work.

That sounds like a weird problem. Did the game work before you got the hard drive ?

rkfrompk - It is probably caused by the patch. I heard there was a lot of issues with it. Did you try downloading and installing the patch not the incremental ?

yes i did a fresh install and installed the FULL 500 meg patch. After installing the full patch it did not work.

After two days of messing with background programs, drivers, talking to EA support, and all sorts of crap. I solved it.

It was the freaking desktop background that was killing it.

For whatever reason, the fact that I had a large size desktop background was eating up too much memory for BF2 to load, and that stupid problem killed it, even though I have 2 GBs. EA couldn't figure it out, neither could just about anyone else.

So anyone out there with this problem that has a large KB size desktop background, remove it and try again. Works perfectly now.

i have the same background i before 1.4 and it worked fine with 1.3 but i'll try it anyways..

edit: nope. changed the background still didnt work

ok i did yet another fresh install and installed the 1.4 FULL patch and it STILL wont work. what do i have to do to get this to work?!!

rkfrompk did you play the game before ? If you didnt it is probably caused by your video card. Whitch wont let you play until you get a better one.

Shut up please, Svalsbard was right about the desktop background thing, as that turned out to be why my game wouldn't start up.

I have the same problem... But when i removed the bg.. it still dosent load the game, the black screen just stayes longer, so i closed all my apps (msn/ts/ati tray) and it goes further still, but it just doesnt load.. :'(
Why do EA keep killing this potentially good game...

It happens to me also.

PAtched to 1.3 goes perfect.

PAtch to 1.4 and there you go, cannot load.


Background change wont solve it.

Anyone here with this problem has Widescreen??

Cause when i got my monitor the exact thing occured till i figure it out modifyng the video.con archive. ( documents and settings\your name\profiles\video.con )

The problem is that with 1.4 i dont seem to find it anymore!!

ok i figured out the problem for me. i was using a multi-language pack and it messed up the patch. i did another install and applied the language pack after patching and it works fine now. Game runs great on mostly high settings and jalalallalallalallalabad is fun.
