How do you get explorer to auto shutdown and restart when starting/closing BF2?

I've always done this, I open task manager, open BF2 and when the splash screen is on I kill explorer and close task manager

          Frees up resources.

Does it still let those other programs already started be up and running? I mean I have sw firewall and I don't like to be "naked" during playing.

Has no effect on running processes mate.
All Explorer does is provide the GUI (Graphical User Interface) for you to interact with the DOS.
When you shut it down, everything that WAS running, will continue to run, but resources have been freed up
