Huge problems with ATI drivers.

I've been deadlocked into a situation from where seems no return. Nowadays I'm forced to use old 6.2 drivers that really aren't anymore supported. Or it seems so because actually I can only play ET without crashing or having errors. This all is because I can't use the latest drivers.
The problem I get with relatively new drivers is very odd. After installing they force colours to 4-bit and res to 640*480. I can't do anything else than uninstall the drivers. And as far as BF2 is concerned the 6.2 result in sometimes very annoying graphical errors.
Can anybody help me? Is this because the GPU is broken or is there something else? I remember reading somewhere that this was about ATI GPU vs VIA mobo something. I hope I don't have to change my hardware because of drivers.

Club 3d ATI Radeon 9600Pro
1024mb ram
Shuttle AK39N mobo (VIA chipset)
etc.

There was some discussion about this at Driverheaven but they hadn't found a solution.

thats a bit worrying, your system is identical to mine except i have an athlon processor. i dont even know what ati drivers im using, how do i check?

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with an Intel motherboard/processor.

When you uninstall the ATI Catalyst, do you use ATI's cat-uninstaller.exe program first?

Also, do you have the latest Microsoft .Net Framework? They just updated this in April of this year.

Using the cat-uninstaller.exe program and having the latest .Net Framework are critical for proper installation & use of ATI Catalyst. Both are available for download at ATI's site.

Yeah I think that I've done pretty much everything. I even used DriverCleaner to remove all that was left.
