BF2 performance help

Hey all, I've recently been experiencing problems with my game. I'm not sure if this is with 1.3 or what it is but I'm getting a lot of lag, connection problems, and game crashes. Below are my specs, how can I improve my gameplay?

Dell XPS400
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz (2 CPUs)
1534MB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT 256MB

I'm playing BF2 with most graphics settings on medium but some on high and my game res. on 1024x768. Any help?

probaly just 1.3. but there was a post earlier about lag looked like a good website you should see if you can find it

Connection Problems and CTD's you could chalk up to the 1.3 patch. What size power supply do you have? I'm thinking your Video Card was purchased after you bought the system, and possibly your power supply isn't good enough. I'm no techi, but I do know acouple things - lol.

Yeah I did buy it after I bought my system. How can I find my power supply details? I'm on vacation and I don't have it with me, can I find it using dxdiag that I DO have with me?

DXDiag, hmm, I know that gives you alot of System info, but from memory I don't know if it tells you PS Watts. Try it.........If you have anything less than 400-450watts this might be the problem. Hopefullly someone with more advanced knowledge will be able to help you further. But without actually having the System infront of you I don't know for sure how to find out what PS watts you have. I'll edit this post if I find the answer.

EDIT: I couldn't find anything in DXDiag regarding Power Supply.........If you have the invoice from Dell with you, that would tell you(lol). The only other way I know, besides downloading Free software, is looking inside the case.

have a look in the case you can normally see the specs on the psu itself

I don't know enough about Dell to tell you "what's the best". From what I understand, Dell machines are alittle finiky with non-Dell components, so my advice would be to ask Dell. Unless someone here who has a Dell can answer that for you.

Lag - Are you currently using a wireless internet ? If you are this is the problem with the lag. Because of the packets. A packet is a formatted block of information carried by a computer network. In my opinion if you are using a wireless internet the information doesnt get carried as fast. Whitch causes to get a "Connection Problem". Correct me if I am wrong

Crashes - What do you mean by crashes ? Do you crash right when you hit Join Game ? If thats the case just have Auto Join Game checked off and let it join for you. Another way is to count to 15 and then click Join Game. (Thanks for the tips who ever posted that)

No I'm not using a wireless connection. My dad is telling me there is no reason to get a more powerful power supply as there is no reason and it won't do anything. I really want to upgrade my computer to make bf2 gameplay smoother, what should I upgrade?

Apparently it says right on the 7800GT box you need a minimum of 400Watt Power Supply. I don't have a 7800 or i would verify this for you.

Your system is pretty good dude, so I don't know what you can upgrade, other than another 512 ram, but unless you are running everything on High you don't need that either. I don't want to argue with your Dad, and I said I'm not a techi, but it seems as though there is a problem with your machine if you're lagging alot. Though, there seems to be alot of people complaining about Lag lately so who knows dude, luckily I'm not one of them I quess

Hello. I have a Dell XPS system similar to yours, though a bit older.

The first thing I'd recommend is shut down any unnecessary background applications. In task manager, try and keep your total number of processes below 40 if possible. Start in the system tray (at the bottom right side of the screen)-- if there's anything there that you don't need when running BF2, close it out.

If your hard drive is getting full almost to the point of not having any space left, this could be impacting the swap file. Try freeing up some space.

Make sure your antivirus isn't running any disk-intensive scans while you're playing.

Lastly, make sure you have all the latest drivers for your video and sound cards.
