As for the 1.3 patch, yes I'm pretty sure you'll need it.

Every server I know about is running the official version of BF2, version 1.3

Whenever 1.4 is publicly released, we will confirm it works and either tell you it works or release a patch to fix compatibility issues.

We have not tested with older versions of BF2
