the guy modified the knife tweak file so that it would have a ranged attack
he waited for the animation of the knife being tossed, clicked, then switched weapons

simple enough

I think its the Hard Justice single player mod. I remember using it, but I cant remember exactly which mod. I do know its single player/coop only though

Yes, the Mod Masters who made Allied Intent did that.

I posted that just to give you an inkling of what is possible when modding BF2. That is, you're not just stuck with vanilla; lots of other delicious flavors out there too. :)
