Boosting mic volume

My microphone input is very quiet on my computer, even with its volume ion sound settings all the way up, and with mic boost on.

Is there a way of boosting it any more, maybe with a 3rd party program?

Are you 100 percent sure the recording volume is cranked and not the playback volume ? These are 2 separate controls.

A little info on soundcard and mic used would help.

Yes 100%. I just bought a new soundcard and am using that (asonic L-8738-4C).

I'm using the drivers that come with XP as the driver CD that came with it was melted :O

Mic is just a standard headset, works fine on my normal soundcard, just not on the new one.
