If dx 9 can do this though, why aren't more developers pushing out graphics similar to this. Why is this the firs ttime we've ever seen graphics this good, but it's still current gen technology?

Because it takes a lot of development, especially if you start from scratch and have to do your own engine, and by the time you are done the technology could just become obsolete.

If you think that people can play this game easy now, you are wrong, current hi-end hardware still is not fully sufficient. But when the game is released, there already should be 4x4 from AMD, and core 2 extreme 6900. And of course the dx10 cards.

The second point is because people want the game to be played NOW, so they get the present value cash.

People could have made asuper mega game, but for example only BlueGene supercomputer would be able to play it. WHen developing the developers look ahead, but not too far.

This isnt the first time that Crytek has done this, when Far Cry came out in March of 2004 it looked like....

...and few people had the hardware to play it on max.
Same with Doom 3. There are some companies that set new standards on graphics technology.
