There are many mods available for BF2. Many of the better ones have not been released yet. Since the mods are not projects belonging to EA, they cannot be ranked. There is no ranking system in place yet, but they are working on an Alternative Ranking System.
There are plenty of news updates regarding mods located here, or you can do a search on the forums; a very commonly overlooked function of forums around the world.

Sounds like your getting a little bored of BF2 Vanilla. BF2 Strat is fresh on the scene and we play in ways you have never seen before. At least try the 2 maps I have on the server now. I have yet to get bad feedback from any who have been on these maps. We have a scrim tonight.

USI mod is good and so is the Nations at war is good as well!!

CQB (Close Quarters Combat) is a mod where you fight as infantry (no vehicles) in urban areas in Asian places like Fuji and Japan. Very addictive for the groundpounder style player. Very smooth and stable.

Its too bad that I cant find any servers anymore. Maybe others have better luck?

Mods to look out for: Dcon, FH2, PoE2, USI (already out), Operation Peacekeeper (also out, version .15) and a helluva lot more.

SandBox mod and Wake Air show are really good!

Sandbox mod is great. But it's not really a traditional mod that gives you new maps, weapons, and armies. Airmaps is an ok mod. Operation Peackeepers is ok but I don't like the weapons. Project Reality is pretty good. Changes up the gameplay and makes it more realistic. There are plently of mods out there and being worked on but the problem is most mods have about 5 servers or less. And it's even harder to find a populated mod server.
