Anyone seen screen freezes like this?

I just started playing BF2 recently and my rig is old so that probably has lots to do with this. Has anyone seen a screen freeze like the one below and found a fix? Here is what happens: the screen image will freeze but text will keep updating and I can still see myself moving on the minimap. The odd thing is it doesn't crash the game, it will "fix itself" after 15-20 seconds or I die, whichever comes first. So it's not a full lockup or CTD situation, but still really freakin' annoying. The image sort of speaks for itself. Any ideas?



My computer: amd 2700, 1gig pc3200, SATA drives, RADEON 9600SE (yes all old crap). I think I will be starting the upgrade process with a new GPU and better quality memory. I haven't run memtest yet, but until I pulled out one of my 512 sticks (it was 1.5 GIG previously) I was getting CTDs every 20 minutes.

ive seen somthing like that while using other programs,or sometimes when i fall into a glitch in a certain game, but never just like that

If its an athlon XP 2700+ CPU I would just save up for a new machine if I were you. The 2700+ would really hold back an newer graphics card, no matter how much ram you have.


Anyway back on topic, do you think it is your graphics card having a spaz attack becuase it can display the info quick enough? It looks like it is layering new stuff on top of old images.

thanks for feedback, especially your comments merlin. I found the problem. I'm posting this just in case some else happens to get this in the future. It was my firewall. I use Kerio's Personal Firewall (one of the best, imo) and the packet inspection was turned on (called Network Intrusion Prevention System). It's basically a signature based IDS. Anyhow, after turning that off while I'm gaming the problem went away. I still need new hardware and whatnot, but at least that crap is gone. My guess is that certain packets were geting 'snagged' for further inspection or the NIPS was just upping my PING or something. Hope this helps someone...

It seems as if you get stuck on one point on the map, and all the HUD things go crazy and overwrite themselves on the screen, lol...

Sorry I don't have any tips...

hmm, first time i ever heard of a NIPS thing. i at first thought u were using wireless or something. it also gives ping spikes that can sometimes cause what u see, overlapping gfx.
