Can anybody explain why bunny-hoppers and prone spammers are so hard to hit?

Last night I was on one of my regular servers, hosted by a clan that I won't name here, when one of their members and I came face to face. I knelt down and opened up a 3-round burst on him and he did the same to me, neither of us died. I kept firing but he began strafing and jumping. He jump-jump-jumped 3 times behind a crate. I tracked him the whole way and emptied an entire clip in his direction. But you know as well as I do that he didnt die...

He then emerged from the crate on his stomach, he did the worm across the courtyard in front of me and spammed shots at me from his RPK. I did the same, only difference was that I was just strafing while he was worming around. You know the story... I didnt kill him, instead he killed me...

I sarcastically complemented him on his "skills" and he kindly thanked me. blah blah blah, I got the bronze medal for the round... Im not to pissed...

My question is, what the heck makes these guys so hard to hit? Do their hitboxes get SO far out of whack that you cant even manage a random impact? It seems like when a person is jumping their hitbox just totally vanishes. What's the story? Can anybody explain how the phenomenom works?

In a similar situation, I was in a tank and a bunny-hopping sniper ran from one building to another, probably 15 yards. He was jumping the whole way and I couldnt get a single hit to register, not even the big cannon's splash damage hit him.

    is it all netcode?

It is frustrating, isn't it? I do not know for sure, but logically it should be some combination of code/hitboxes one would think.

I know this will probably start a "bunnyhopper yay or nay" war.

Some people swear by grenades or shotties to kill bunnyhoppers. While I do believe that strategy can work, IMO, more often than not he can avoid both. But, that's just my opinion.

Would people in real life jump around to avoid fire? Sure. Would they jump 25 times over 100 yards wearing 65 lbs. of gear? No. (Yes, I know this is not a reality simulator) Give them 2-3 jumps, then their stamina meter is drained, and can't jump again until it's more than half full.

    I do not bunnyhop. Period.

Yup, and yup. The hitboxes get all outta-whack, and the randomness of the "bullet cone" doesn't help either. I've seen debug shots of hitboxes and their movements, but I think it was a different game (same problem though). I'm not sure what the best method is to dispose of these players. I'll admit that I jump and crouch/prone in a random fashion when getting shot at - trying to stay alive. Retreating and re-grouping/gathering/healing yourself really helps, but a lot of players get tunnel vision. I'm getting way off topic, but yeah - hit boxes and coding.

:edit: I guess I didn't explain how it works, but I lack the skills to make that possible.

I just wish I thought like an exploiting Quake 3 player... I just dont jump unless I have an obstacle to clear.

If I could train myself to hop around like that I bet my KDR would soar!

Are you saying he is behind a supply crate? If he is behind a supply crate, then I know why you died.

I think he was far enough away from the supply crate to not get the healing effects, is that what you're getting at, Rocketpunch? Even if you in it's helaing radius, it seems to take forever to heal up on a crate.

I've not noticed this myself. Trying to nail someone hopping around is harder for sure, but you can still hit them. I am slowly getting better at hitting moving targets, where as before I found it almost impossible.

I know for a fact you can hit them because if you aim and tap off one round at them in mid air you will hit them as long as they are in your sights. I have had plenty of sniper kills doing this. My first shot has hit and they start bouncing up and down looking for me. I wait, aim, aim, then boom! mid air hit!

Doesn't work all the time but then again, when it doesn't I know it was because I didn't time it quite right.

The net code will have it's limits but the transition from a game like CS:S was quite hard as it's a lot easier to hit stuff in that game. It's for this reason my friend hates BF2. He's really good at CS but struggled quite badly on BF2. So much so, he now can't stand the game.

I usually miss when they go nuts right in front of me and tend to lose sight of them and then of course die :)
If they are 10-15m away then its 50-50 chance. But maybe I haven't come accross any of the good ones.
As much as i've tried to hop to safety the last round comes around the safe corner and i'm still dead so i spare myself of the frustration and just use the sprint.

the reason theyre hard to hit, is because the guns have **** accuracy and exagerated bullet drop. couple that with having to lead a target by a fair distance and it makes it worse.

not that it really bothers me, i usually kill most of them that jump about. but i do tend to stay away from alot of infantry fights because its simply ******** thats exagerated to the extreme.

Is there a way to turn visible hitboxes on? Then the secret of killing the dolpin diver will be revealed.

yeah, the accuracy is off compared to real life. But I reckon this is one of the things that makes the game unique. If the weapons where more accurate then it would play more like CS. But then again, how accurate is a rifle when your running and shooting at someone?

I dont like bunny hoppers at all , their just try to be a so called pro gamers , try to be owners. But those who play clanwars should know that there are no clans who does not bunnyhop . All of them do youse bugs also. Like shooting behind a wall ( you cant hit them.)

Re: Can anybody explain why bunny-hoppers and prone spammers are so hard to hit?

I'd love to blame it on poor coding, but I find that when I die to a dolphin diver, it's mainly because I was caught off guard, and I didn't properly lead my shots. In the heat of the moment, most of us just line up our shots and expect the enemy to go and stay prone.

However, if you properly lead your shots, you can hit anybody when they're moving, regardless if they're in a mid-air jump or not.

The difficult part about this is knowing how to lead up your shots while staying on the move. Of course, unless you're strafing, you won't be able to do this without dolphin diving or bunny hopping yourself. If you just stay prone, you're an easy target to paint with bullets.

If you're a bunny hopper, or dolphin diver, chances are your greatest enemy is a sniper. It's a requirement to lead your shots as a sniper, therefore they tend to do the best against fools who do nothing but dolphin dive around. Dolphin diving can backfire and it can lead to a headshot.

Instant Proning does not give you an evasion advantage. Instead, it gives you an advantage to your accuracy. This unlike the rumored "Dissapearing Hit Box" is actually caused by poor coding.

ah thats not what im saying, i think the running accuracy should be worse than it currently is.
but standing still accuracy should be far better than it is..

                              What is "instant proning"?

Also, just to clarify, it wasnt a supply crate. That was a poor choice of words on my part.

It was one of the big box-like things outside the TV station on Sharqi.
