Good set of 'phones for VoIP?

    G'day all,

In an effort to get the most out of BF2, I'm looking at get a microphone/ headphone headset for VoIP.

Now, I don't want to go with anything fancy (I've seen some Logitech USB ones for AUS$60+, which is a bit excessive in my eyes) - but in the same vein, I don't want to pick up anything dodgy (I've seen some AUS$10 Skype orientated ones, which don't look up to the task).

So, the question is - what do you guys and girls use, and what would you recommend?

The other question is, is it possible to only use the microphone and let the rest of the sound come through my speakers? (Is it as simple as just plugging in the microphone jack, and not the headphone jack?)

I do use the Logitech 350 USB - they are awesome and well worth the $$$

If you go with USB, then no sir, you can not use the surround sound on your machine because the USB uses software to produce the sound. It works as a pair, the mic and the speakers, and cannot be used seperately, independant of each other.

    Hope this helps some.

I bought real cheap ones at Best buy, brand is CA? lol what ever that is, 10 bucks I think. They work no problem.

No sir, once the USB headset is pluged in, that is your source.

I won't say no 100%, I'm sure there is a way around it, but would be more hassel than its worth I would think.

TIP: If you do get a USB headset, it needs to be pluged in before booting up the game. If you try to plug them in after you have started BF2, it will not work.

Thanks for the help so far peoples, I checked the Logitech 350 out on the web - at AUS$70 it's a bit pricey, but something to consider.

                Keep 'em coming... :)

Just do everyone a favor on TS if you insist on letting the game come through your speakers...PUSH TO TALK!

I tried mics that ranged from 25 to 40 dollars. I couldn't get them to work to save my life. I bought a cheap 14 dollar pair and they work great.... Figures!

Turtle Beach 5.1 headphones... you could find them on eBay for under $40 USD. The 5.1 works wonderfully and the mic is 100% adjustable. I got the X-51 headset, but there is another (more pricey) set with a "powered" subwoofer. I heard/read the sub doesn't do anything but shake. Anyway, good set of headphones for all your 5.1 needs.

:edit: They aren't USB. They plug right into the sound card, and even have colored plugs to match the sound card. The more expensive set comes with splitter cables so that you can have the headphones and speakers plugged in at the same time. I just use the headphones all the time, or switch the wires if I want speakers (it takes 2 seconds).

yes, i have TS on auto-detect so i can scream and swear down the microphone of my USB headset, while still having artillery blaring out of my surround sound unit :P.

If you have a family, buy open phones so you don't have to yell to hear yourself speaking. I had quite many power loses previously when my wife limited my tone by visiting switchboard.

Now, I have Logitech Precision gaming headset. I still tend to shout once and a while but with lower volume. Well, at least she have not visited to that damn board latelly.
