Hello there,
I had suffered this problem for quite a long time. BF2 is installed on my "F:\" drive, meaning I can't repatch it if I re-install it. So basically, I was pretty pissed off when it kept crashing to the desktop. But, after months of toiling, I think I may have found a solution!
Basically, I was curious and pointed the finger of blame at my graphics card. Or something to do with the display. So I went into Video settings in BF2 (Options > Video) and clicked "Restore to Default" at the bottom. While nothing was physically changed, it seemed to do the trick. That was one solution, a more viable than the second...
... Basically, I set up a single player first. If that worked, then 9 times out of 10 the multiplayer would load with no issues.
Hope this helps some of you.
