Hello all, i read the sticky about compression techniques but it didint seem to help me. My clan currently does not have battle recorder so all i have been using is Fraps to record in game footage. All of you know that fraps saves its files in .avi format which are really freakin huge. Also, im only using windows movie maker to edit the footage.....I have the full version of premeir but i do not know how to use it... :evil:

Im wondering if someone can tell me a good method and program to compress the .avi files that fraps saves. Also, i really hate it when i compress something and i lose the quality of the original recording.

battlerecorder is an inbuilt thing in BF2 (under community tab on main bf screen). As for compression it is advised that you edit the movie prior to compression (a lot of progs to do that, favoured here are Premier Pro and Sony Vegas, both of which come as trials for free and have simple video tutorials), and then when all the effects are done you compress it. Usually its done via VirtualDub.

Screw VDub. If you're using moviemaker, it will compress for you when you render. Where is a [free] video tutorial for Vegas? He's right though. Use uncompressed media until you make your final compressed render to ensure the best quality.

Ye but it renders in .wmv aka. crappy format.

VirtualDub works extremely well especially with DivX, you need to play around with the settings but following the video compression technique tutorials and a few little tweeks here and there and you will find a good compression/quality balance.

Yeah, I'm just trying not to confuse him by throwing a bunch of programs at him. He didn't understand the sticky, so I was using the KISS method.

I understood the sticky.....But I am not using battle recorder because its not enabled on my clans server. So i was wondering if their is a better technique for how i am doing things. Here are the steps i am taking to make my video.

Play BF2
Record Footage i want via Fraps while in game.
Edit movie with movie maker.
Save & compress using movie maker options.

I saved it as an .AVI file just for kicks on movie maker and my 2:00 minute movie was 423mb... ROFL!!

I have full version of Premeir Pro...but my knowledge of the program is very little and i feel i can do more with movie maker....kinda sad.

I use the DivX codec (excellent), but I don't think it works with 1024x786 videos? I compressed a 800x600 video easily, but it gives me an error when I try to do 1024x786 (which is what all my other movies are).

divx has some pixel restriction, I use xvid basically same but without watermark. And yes there are vid tutorials for free for premier, which show you what to do and how ( video with sound ).

If you are going to use WMM to edit just put them straight in there, NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER compress more than once, compression should only be done after the final edit. Windows Movie Maker exports pretty darn compressed so compressing it before that is stupid and a waste of time.

And try 1024x768, by 786 is not a standard resolution.

Doesn't matter, because we're not the ones setting the resolution manually. And 68 is still a multiple of 2...
