9700PRO and graphics issues

Hey,

I recently installed my new Athlon X2 4200+ and ASUS A8V-Deluxe and currently I only have one component left to update - My graphics card. I dont have enough money for one at the moment, but I'm looking at getting a 7800GS (AGP) as I believe that's the highest spec card available for AGP.

Currently I have a 9700PRO but I'm having some problems with it.

As anyone with a brain would, I reinstalled windows and formatted my drive for my new board & proc. I have pretty much squeezed out all of the errors I have encountered but this one is a new one.

When playing BF2 (gfx settings on LOW), after around 45mins of gameplay, my monitor says it no longer recieves a signal, although the actual PC remains on... but I can't see anything - forcing me to reboot. This has happened twice now and I don't really see why...

My 9700PRO was working PERFECTLY on my old install of windows with my old mobo & proc yet on this one... it's just being a b*tch.

I don't think it's a heat issue... Processor is at 32C (minimal usage, around 37C when playing BF2) and Mobo at 26C (31 when playing BF2)

I have installed the 6.7 cats aswell as the 6.5s and yet it still happens!!

Any ideas?? Anyone??

If you're running AGP on 8x try lowering it to 4x - small impact to your framerate but the system should be much more stable.

Did you change your power supply when you upgraded you PSU? Your symptoms sound like its getting overloaded and shutting things down. I assume when you're not playing a game it wont loose the signal at all?

But yeah, a 7800GS is a good card in AGP, or an X850XT.

PS: I woulda got a new graphics card instead of that processor.

As lemony's clanmember I shall clarify a few things.

First, "Did you change the power supply when you upgraded your PSU?" That doesn't make any sense. If you mean upgraded your CPU, then no. He changed the PSU a while before upgrading the CPU.

Second, he will buy a nVidia as we both don't like ATI.

Third, his old processor was the bottleneck, I think it was a 2400+.


He has tried everything anyone can possibly think of, and the problem is still occurring.

HMM..... i have exactly the same problem a long time ago i was playing, the game didnt freeze but the monitor was black and CPU load was big
I dont know what happen it just gone...

Yes I meant upgrading the power supply when he upgraded the CPU. When he upgraded his power supply did he buy a high quality one or just a crappy cheap one that proported to have 600W or something?

I've had a similar issue with the same card, turned out it was a power supply issue, after a period of time at full load (running BF2), my system just couldnt take it, and my graphics card was the first thing to go as it was the component drawing the most power at the time. I suggest he swap out the power supply to completely rule that out as it seems like the most obvious culprit.

Saying "he will buy a nVidia as we both don't like ATI" is pretty one eyed. What if ATI made a card that was 3 x better than anything nVidia had to offer? Would you still say no based on your perception of what is a good brand or not?

If I had a 9700 Pro and a 2400+, there is no way on earth I would consider the processor to be the bottleneck. This game is heavily GPU intensive as are any 3D games, you would reap many time the benefits of a graphics card upgrade than you would just getting a faster processor. I can show you endless evidence that supports this.

It's a 480W ThermalTake PurePower PSU.

I doubt it is a PSU issue... have had this one in for a month, runs like a dream.

Thats the point though... they have'nt made a card 3x better than nvidia.

Before this there was no problem with my graphics... All medium with no lag...

I guess he worded that wrong - I've tried everything I can think of.


On another forum I have found that ATi cards and VIA chipsets don't seem to like each other, so I am going to lower AGP to 4x and see if there is a difference...

Do you know your GPU temp though? You could have a failed or clogged GPU fan or maybe there's less airflow over the card after you put everything back together. Sounds an awful lot like an overheat problem my brother had when the fan on his 9600 failed.

OK. It just seems that because you're able to play the game for a short period of time, and then it dies, that it could be power or heat related. You've stated your tempuratures and that sounds fine, so thats why I put it down to being power related.

Do you have another AGP card you can try in it?
