Should a AMD 3200 be enough?

I'm looking to build a new pc, one to play BF2 and BF2142 (and all the cool new games ) on med-high gfx with minimal lag.

I currently have a 1.7 celeron
a gig of ram
and a radeon 9550.

I was looking into getting:

AMD 3200 venice
X850XT 256 (PCI-E version)
with my gig of ram (and upgrade to more later, im just looking to make minimal purchases atm)


Would that do? should the 3200 be enough to play the game well, and other games in the future, or should I not bother. Thanks :)

The 3200 is not a huge jump from the celeron go to dual core's it will last longer + more effecient get the x2 3800, its only for 150$ right now but to be honest if u r an extreme overclocker the 3200 can go really mad.
And what matters in games are usually GPU rather than CPU. But a weak CPU can bottleneck a good GPU and vise versa

yea dont buy dated technology. go with something thats dual core, and this time next year we'll probably already be quad core.

if u want to save money u can go on ebay, but watch out for shady sellers. i just sold my old x2 4200+ for $155 so u can find a bargin on a dualcore, but just gotta do a bit of searching.

The 3200 venice and that gcard will be more then capapble of playing bf2 on high settings with nice framrates.

You guys are smoking rock if you think an AMD64 is even remotely close to a Celeron 1.7...lol. It would open up the Celeron and eat it from the inside out.

However, they are right about buying something newer and faster...as that 3200 was great 1 and 2 years ago...today it is pretty much the minimum CPU to have now.

But if that is all you can do because you must keep your ram...then do it. But from what you have picked out already, it seems to me that holding onto just 1 gig of ram would be wasteful because it severe limits your future upgrades.

If you can manage to scrap that ram, which is worth only about $50 now anyways...you can buy a DDR2 motherboard which would allow you to pick from one of the new Intel's or the new AM2 socket.

New video cards are coming out from ATI at the end of this month. So early next month would be a great time to build this new comp. It gives you a few more weeks to scrape up a little more cash, and build a system that is totally upggradeable and with a better video card than the one you chose.

The system you have described is the one I currently use, and it works fine. I also have an XFi sound card.
I will upgrade when necessary, which will be in about one year.

hmmmmmmmmm there is not even 1 celeron processor that can match any of the AMD 64 processors... not even the semprons.

i bought a 3200+ venice some time ago and i can tell that Bf2 runs like a dream on it, and other games in general run even better.

just google for benchmarks if u want to be sure.

If you are looking to save money, by all means get that CPU. You can always upgrade it in the future. I suspect that you will need a new mobd also? So getting the 3200 and upgrading later is a wise choice.

get the amd64 4000+ for £80 pounds lol will work well for another year or so

dont get the X23800+ 512kb cache between 2 cores sux if you want a decent X2 get the 4200+ or 4400+:p

As of today, the difference between cache sizes is totally meaningless. X-Bit just did an article on the new AMD64 3600+ dual core that has HALF the cache of the normal AMD64's...so now it has 2x256 instead of 2x512 or even the 2x1024 of the top models.

They overclocked it to 2.6ghz to match the AMD64 5000+...it was equal or better even though it had HALF the cache, thus proving cache doesn't do jack...YET!

The presumption is that future games will utilize the extra cache, but as of right now it doesn't.

BF2 has problems with some of the Dual-Cores... I have X2 4400+, and I have to use only 1 core so my "connection to server won't be lost".
BTW Don't get me wrong, this 2200 core deals fine+ with BF2, doens't interrupt the fps at all. With 7800GTX 256 I get 100fps, and reaches 250-300 when... I don't know... Losing control with a jet and only sky and coulds are seen or something similar.
So just consider the "risks".
