Got 3d max and need help starting off modeling

I have 3ds max and been messing arround with it for 3 hours. I have a pic of a weapon i want to make but dont no where to start. Can anyone help.
BTW i searched google for tuitorial and got no luck.
So far what i have done is put the pic of the gun as a background pic in the left window. now do i create lines arround it and modify the lines to curve?

Well personally I learned using this awsome video tutorial

Just keep messing with it pretty soon it will be easy just time consuming
