Sound Help!!

HELP ME! my sound wont work on my computer, for no apparent reason. i have never had this problem before, just happened today. i plugged in my headset and at first there was sound in this movie i was watching, then when i tried to watch anothe movie, the sound wouldnt work. with it unplugged my speakers dont have sound either. when i click on the sound properties thing in the bottom right corner, this comes up
"There are no active mixer devices available. To instal mixer devices, go to Control Panel,click Printers and Other Hardware, then click Add Hardware
This program will now close."
instead of the volume controler. i havent uninstalled anything, today or yesterday. it was fine yesterday. but the wierd thing is, when i click on the speaker icon, there is a *ping* sound, so that means that the sound itself works, but nothing else with sound works. HELP!

i followed the instruction it told me to do, and it says all the stuff is working fine. it seems to think i added or removed some hardware

yes. i have tried tons of sh*t and nothing is working. i used the troubleshooter and it tells me that everything is work fine. and i can still hear sounds, or at least the error sound that comes when i press the speaker button to adjust the volume. its really wierd, because yesterday i logged into bf2 and started playing, and my sound quality was changed, from low to medium, and i never touched anything. i never installed anything, uninstaled anything, added or removed any hardwarw, or even OPENED my computer for at least a week

the only thing i could possibly think of is that the plug where you plug the speakers into is messed up? If you have a mic does that work???

ok so i restart my computer and i walked away. when i got back i saw it was a black screen that had white letters on it, saying something like windows couldnt start properly because of some hardware problem. but i restarted it and the sound would work fine, and the sound adjustment thing would come up when i pressed on the speaker icon, until i tried to play a movie or do something else with sound, then i would get the same error message when i tried to press the speaker icon

and boarder, thank you for trying to help, but i dont think u even understand what my problem is. it isnt just a problem where everything is fine but i cant hear any sound. it is a thing where i can actually hear sound, but only for 1 or 2 things. it has nothing to do with my volume turned down , or speakers/headset not plugged in.

If you are plugging and unplugging devices to the card, did you possibly unseat the sound card from it's PCI slot? (if it is a card and not motherboard sound).

no i didnt. i just opened my computer and checked to see if everything was in right, and could fnid nothing wrong. remember, i can still hear some sound, like the clicking sound sometimes when i click on something in the control panel, i have no idea what is wrong, but something is definitly f*cked up


alright, it seems like i can hear all the system sounds, like erroe sounds and clicking sounds and all that, but nothing else. i tried to play a song in musicmatch, but it says "WaveOut Format not supported" for every single song i play, mp3 or wav

I might have a solution to this problem. Go to

Start>
All Programs>
Accessories>
Entertainment>
Volume Control

Once you are in Volume Control on the top left you should see "Options" under Options you should see "Properties" click on that. Make sure everything is checked off in the check boxes on the bottom of the Properties window.

nope. that is the same thing that opens when u click on the small icon on the task bar, so that same error thing popped up
