normal patch = fully integration and design tested patch, generally very stable, but it depends, and what you or i get
Beta patch - is for integration test( real life testing across networks etc ), can be unstable, still in test thus may have several revisions, you normally have to sign up for beta tests or choose to do it, but you may get a dodgy patch
Alpha patch - new functionality and regression test( i.e. make sure all software tests are run on it and pass ) and in house regression testing

Hope that helps, stick with full versions normally unless theyre bogey like 1.3 as i enjoyed the 1.4Beta 2 test much more than playing 1.3 full but all the servers are gone now

It's hard to say with any degree of certainty as to what is a actual change or a perceived change. That is why we need a change log to compare the stated changes with the actual gameplay.

RGR. The 1.4 "Official" release is speculated to be released within the next week or 2. We can only hope.
One thing that has been fixed is the crashing to desktop issue that everyone was having.

actually i didnt have the crashing some times it doesnt start though
