You hit the nail on the head there. Right on the head.

Also, 90% of the time, people complain about "realism" when it is themselves who are getting killed -- they need something to lash out on. It's too bad that you notice certain trends in the community, ie: most of those that accuse of cheating aren't very good players themselves. You'll rarely see a player in the top 5 (ingame scoreboard) accuse someone of cheating.

The case is the same here... are they angry that it isn't believable for the community's sake, or for their own?

But it is my taste in games that dictate my feelings about BF2. The BF2 formula is a mainstream formula - it caters to the lowest common denominator among FPS gamers. It's a "soft" FPS that can attract everyone from all branches - and that's why it's a success.
And as long as they make the game moddable, as I mentioned before, the game nears perfection as long as there is someone around to make it perfect -- or as close as possible to perfect.

The winning formula in the Battlefield series is focused around the fact that it can appeal to nearly any kind of gamer.

Indeed Spetznaz - and I also think that is part of why this game is rather "controversial". It's interesting to note that to this day - over a year after it's release - the discussions are nearly identical today. Any other game and the player community would have simply learned that this is how the game is, end of story. Usually a take-it-or-leave-it type of deal..lol.

It's a curious dichotomy to observe: I've never seen game-forums about one single game with so many passionate and raging arguments about "how things shouldn't be" and at the same time with so many players active at the same time. It seems to me that BF2 is the game that everybody loves to hate..lol.

I think that this very attribute of BF2 - whether you choose your version "appeal to nearly any kind of gamer" or my less forgiving "lowest common denominator" (lol) - is the very reason why the game is BOTH extremely popular and argued abouit, at the same time.

In my mind it begs the question whether it's possible to make a FPS-game that bring players from so many FPS sub-genres together and make them "happy" all at the same time. BF2 must, by any account, be the game that has come the closest.

...it will be intersting to see how BF2142 will manage this tenuous and delicate balancing-act..lol.

        Cheers :-)
