Only able to use 4x AA

Hey there. Just thought I'd throw this problem out there for someone to help me with. It's not all that BAD of a problem but it is kind of annoying.

BF2 crashes everytime I manually change the game to 6x antialiasing via the video.con file. All of the other settings can be boosted (haven't tried AF, though) without crashing the game but AA above 4x does.

It'd be nice to use a lower resolution like 1024x768 with 6x AA instead of having to use a higher resolution with a lower amount of AA samples to acheive a minimum in shimmering. Holy run-on sentence.

I have no problems bumping AA up to 8x in other games (though I normally don't go higher than 6x).

    System Specs:

    Windows XP SP2
    512MB of DDR2 400MHz
    3.2GHz P4 w/HT
    nVidia GeForce 6800 w/256MB
91.31 Drivers (hate this new interface)
160GB SATA HD w/ 50 free GB's of space (sometimes this is a good thing to state)

I also have another more annoying problem with BF2. More specifically with VoIP. It works fine with my girlfriend's account but it doesn't work at all in mine. I have the setting enabled and everything but there's no icon when I push the comm buttons and no one can hear me (no, i haven't changed the keys :p). I have TS running most of the time, would this affect my in-game VoIP'age?

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to take the time out to help a fellow out :)

For the VOIP. Go into your Audio controls in BF2 and turn off the VOIP and apply. Then turn it back on and hit apply. This worked for me.

Nvidia cards do not support 6x antialiasing. Could be a problem :)

Plus, the only options in the video.con file for antialiasing are "None," "2samples" and "4samples"

You could force x8 aa in your forceware.

Thanks for the swift responses guys! I never knew about the 6x AA thing for nvidia cards. That's definately a big piece of the puzzle.

Do you think it's possible that I don't have enough RAM (regular and video RAM) to use 8x AA? I've got the option in my driver controls but it turns off after I boot up a high-resource game like BF2.

To Simon: Well, I think I've tried this but I'll try it anyway. I noticed just now that after I "enable" it it turns off as soon as the round starts which sucks hard because you can't change most audio settings in-game. I still don't understand how my girlfriend's VoIP works honkey dorey but mine's all busted. I'll get back to you and thanks for the input!

2 gig of RAM will make a huge difference. Did for me.

Re: Only able to use 4x AA

I figured out my VoIP problem. Well, not so much "figured it out" as it was "bindly fixed it".

Just made my audio.con file "read-only" and the bugger didn't change on me. I'm all good in the VoIP department now. And as for my AA problem I just decided to enable forced 2xQ. Screws up the text a little bit but it looks almost as good as 4x and saves me some FPS. I don't really have a PROBLEM with FPS atm, but every little bit helps :p
