Helicopter:
Flares all exit the aircraft, I believe 6 or 8 simultaneously. They spread all around the aircraft, and thus the ones in the front hardly do anythin for the OPFOR behind u (normally) But it seems, in helos when I flare, I don't get hit by missiles unless I'm still sitting still or the OPFOR is going extremely slow (or on a stinger) and wait for the right time to fire.
Jets:
Flares exit one by one out near the back of the jet. These tend not to work for me, and I have an idea as to why (even with some simple evasive maneuvers) that these might not work too well. Knowing EA, and doing some coding myself, I have an idea for why you still get hit with missiles (and it's not just the fact that some can curve like a mother)
In a situation in a helo, the flares all fall back far from the helo. Thus, the missiles follow the flares and not you and are directed AWAY from the helo.
In a plane, they are produced in a line that follows your plane, thus unless you are banking extremely hard or doing some other evasive manuever that scatters your flares, the missile will be told (by code) to follow the flares right into the back of your plane. I have hit countless people in jets while they are flaring, and missed quite a bit when they are just turning regularly.
So, by code the missiles follow the new flares. This is my theory as why it's harder to hit a helo with missiles when it flares, and why it may be easier at times to be hit (along with strange hitboxes) with a missile while in a plane.
