  • Flying a Helicopter with a joystick

    Hi,

i enjoy flying planes with my saitek cyborg evo wireless, but flying a helicopter is another matter, i'm interested in what king of button set up i should use.

i have the basic pitch an rudder control, also the weapons but im not sure what to do with the buttons to go up and down...any tips?

yes - do NOT use the joystick to fly helos
just use the joystick to set the throttle at about 30-32%
then use the mouse for pitch and roll
and WS for change in power
    and AD for twist left/right

to the VERY FEW that can fly the helo well with a joystick
yes maybe for fun and better barrel rolls
but no where near the same control as with mouse
    especially for the newer pilots

Learn how to fly a helicopter with a joystick. Mouse is effective but lame. With joystick with some practise you will kick azz.

Seriously a joystick is way better for flying helos. Those new to flying will say a mouse is better but they dont realize its taking way more brain power that should be used on the battlefield...Also the throttle should be used ont he keyboard so you have better control of it...Just a thought I mean what do I know I was only ranked like 34 in choppers and my gunner Futureink is ranked like 24...

Joystick and mose is equal in effectiveness, but a joystick is more realistic/more fun to fly.

The reason why joysticks are better than mice for piloting anything is because you can continue turning without having to pick your mouse up, pull it back to starting poition, and turning more. With a joystick you just hold it in the direction you want to go and it will just keep turning.

                  goes to show you
                  all you JOYSTCIK users
                  are not team players
ie your gunner should get the kills not the pilot
and like I said - the guy is JUST learning
and anyone who thinks using a joystick to LEARN to fly is easier than mouse is full of BS
                  ps
and I accept any challenger to meet me anytime to test my theory

Re: Flying a Helicopter with a joystick

it all comes down to personal preference. I know people that are really good with keyboard/mouse, and others that are good with joysticks. I use a joystick and find the throttle control is way more adjustable, but takes more attention.

                    here's my setup:

                      what is your bf2 name'
cause this name has virtually no score

just looked at Futurelink - he looks pretty good as gunner
probably same as my gunner ( a 3star and also a 1st LT)
but Futurelink has almost no time on the ground in comparison
but again - probably a good gunner

Re: Flying a Helicopter with a joystick

I can fly a heli with a joystick, but for more precise control I use keyboard only. However I still use the joystick to set the throttle to about 35% which is ideal for hovering. Personally I've never found the mouse to be very good with jets and heli's, even with BFV.

Re: Flying a Helicopter with a joystick

I would love to fly anything with my Joystick but my joystick doesn't seem compatible with BF2. I have a Logitech Cordless Freedom 2.4. It works fine with BF42 and BFV but has never worked with BF2, even the demo. I used to be a fairly good helo pilot in BF42 and BFV.

Here is what I think the issue is... When I set the throttle up to the throttle on my stick is sets both to the same control, which is unlike BF42 in which is sets one to the + of the axis and the other to the - of the axis. I am stuck flying with a mouse and that just confuses me so I don't fly. Has anyone else has this issue with the Cordless Freedom or any other joystick and if you were to fix it please let me know how.

                              Thanks.
