  • Arg, still cant run dual channel with 4 slots!

Ok, i have 2 512 mb ram, 2 256 mb ram pieces. All are PC3200. The 256s have run in dual channel before.

My DIMM slots are green and black. They go

    GREEN-BLACK-GREEN-BLACK

I had my 4 pieces like this before:

    256-512-256-512

And since it was running single channel, i changed to

    256-256-512-512

And during boot up and in cpu-z it still says single channel!

Do you have to choose it as an option in the bootup screen by hitting del?

Um revolution, i hit Delete while starting up, and couldnt find where to select it.

Also, what happens if i have my configuration of ram wrong, and i hit the dual channel button? Is my configuration right?

My motherboard is Asus P4P8X. BIOS has all these chipset and various voltage things, but i cant find where ram options are.

Does your computer even say you have 1.5gb of memory installed? Are any of the memory modules double-sided? I looked at the manual for your motherboard and it said it is incompatible with double-sided memory modules that have a 16-bit databus width. I don't know if that means all double-sided DIMMs or just certain ones, but it may be an issua. And I'm not seeing anything in the manual about enabled dual-channel in the BIOS...

And just what memory do you have in your computer now? Company+model

Yeah the computer says 1.5 gb of memory, but one of the 512 pieces is double sided....too late to return it too.

What kind of performance do i lose by being stuck in 1.5 gb single? Is 1024 dual better than 1500 single?

If you want it to run in dual channel it would have to be 256-512-256-512.

But best to put the 512 sticks in slots 1 & 3.

Hmm, merlin, thats the configuration i already had it in.

How would i go about engaging the dual channel then?

Youll see around a 15-20% performance increase while running in dual channel, so if you plan on running textures on high, id go with the 1536mb.

Re: Arg, still cant run dual channel with 4 slots!

On some MB's it says to run dual channel with different size memory pairs, to run the largest size in the "A" channel and the smaller size in the "B" channel. So try this: 512-256-512-256

If that does not put you into dual channel mode, then post your system specs, especially the MB model and part number.

What about the other 512 stick?

Both pairs have to be identical otherwise it wont work.
