    Re: The Death of a Legacy - Battlefield 1942 - Battlefield 2142

for all of those with the "im not buying 2142 till they fix bf2" attitude you better wake up because once 2142 is out all attention will be on that game and bf2 will not be forgotten but i expect support for it to highly decrease so i dont think they will be making more "fixes" for it and there for if you wont buy 2142 or play bf2 until they "fix" it then you better forget about it. besides once it comes out im sure more thatn one of those " i wont buy 2142!!!" guys eventually will. lets not lie to ourselves, EA is like a hot slutty girl, she keeps cheating on us but we still insist on loving her.

remember Galaxy drops? Taking off from the sanctuary, going through 3 jump gates to get to a remote continent and dropping down on a lightly guarded Tech Plant.... damn, I miss Planetside (I said that once, didnt I?)

Very well written, I mostly agree with what you said. I look back at BFV and miss that style of gameplay and its MODs.

With BF2, i dont know, but its a different feeling. Its been more than a year now and no mod has come out with a total conversion. And now that 2142 is going to come out in the fall, MODs such as POE and FH2 will not have that much of a player base.

Look at USI. When it first came out, there were a ton of people playing. Servers will always full, but once AF booster came out, it died. I really do think EA is doing this on purpose, not supporting the MOD community and deliberatly trying to attract the players back to the original game.

Look at the time line. BF2 in june, SF in November(not too sure, but somewhere there), EF in March and AF in June. Any mod that could have come out during that time spawn would of died. And now 2142 in the fall.

Moreover, Its genious, the game is RANKED. Buy the booster with new weapons, and guess what that is ranked too. People love to play all night long for an unlock or a badge. I think this primarily killed the MODS.

But i hope i'm wrong, since i want to see POE and FH2 prosper and stick it to EA.

You lost me when you talked about BFV going dead in the water....

EA/DICE did in fact release extra content and maps with BFV and shame on you for not mentioning POE for BFV more, they gave us the taste before BF2 came to the scene...

While I agree with much of what you wrote and found the reading to be pleasant, I will say that the BF series is far from dead however I ma a bit perplexed about them moving into the sci-fi genre...

Their is still plenty of conflicts and wars to make games off of that have happened in the past 50 years....

The BF series really has fueled the fire of a new genre in video games, that of the First Person War....Since the BF games, Operation Flash Point, and all associated mods bring more to the FPS table then, well FPS....Quake, Hal-life, Doom, and so on are real First Person Shooters (I'm talking multiplayer) since they have a lack of a huge environment in which to duke it out with guns, tanks, trucks, planes, choppers, and more....

Bottom line the BF series will always be great games....

With over 26 thousand servers in the US alone I dont see this game dissappearing anytime soon...

Oh and I'm a proud admin/supporter of a UNRANKED custom maps server....

Miss it, it's still around and free up until rank 6

I like these ideas but they begin to make it more MMORPG like, something I don't know if I care for in my FPS menu.....

            Re: The Death of a Legacy - Battlefield 1942 - Battlefield 2142

MOD support is a huge undefined blob of a problem for BF2. I suspect all or most of those issues will evaporate once the final (read 1.4) patch for BF2 is out and BF2142 is released.

Too bad 98% of people say they will bu 2142 even if bf2 isnt fixed.

I wont either unless bf2 IS fixed.

I dont see myself buying 2142 TBH....

I do however like the "booster" pack idea they came up with.... I would rather spend 9 bucks on an add-on to the game then 20 or 30 on a "expansion" that you cant keep playing from one map to the next in a free flowing manner (ya know playing Warlord then going to Karkand)...

That is a beautifully written article about the battlefield series and i agree 100%. I am still going to buy Battlefield 2142 as it looks like an awesome game and EA will be focusing on that instead of Battlefield 2 so there is more chance of 2142 becoming bug free. You never know Ea might of learned from there terrific blunder and make 2142 perfectly, and if not then how do they call themselvs a multi million pound company?

                      Re: The Death of a Legacy - Battlefield 1942 - Battlefield 2142

To give credit where credit is due, the first fully multi-player game that I played allowing you to play in whatever position you wanted to and included vehicles and support roles was Tribes.

In fact, Dice freely admited that Tribes was their insperation for BF42. I suspect that it was the abysmal release of the 3rd Tribes game that gave Dice the go ahead to do a sci-fi Battlefield game. Tribes: Vengeance was so baddly handled on so many levels that it put that series (my favorite of all time) in the ground.

To this day, that old Tribes game still hasn't been beaten in some mechanics. T1 and T2 both included a way more advanced sensor/recon system than has appeared in any game since. It included hugely flexible kits, more game types, and very good modding tools.

Anyway... I just thought I'd toss that out there. Knowing your game industry history ain't a bad thing at all.

                          Yup, quite sure.

I'd seen vehicles, kits, and open play included in FPS before that but never all in one game.

My point is, the OP gave a totally unnecessary history lesson of the BF Franchise, then posted some un-truths about the upcomming patch and bug fixed and served up a big steaming cup of doom & gloom.

People, EA is not asleep at the wheel, they've been developing and producing software since before most of the posters on this board were in middle-school so forgive me if I dont take the general whiny ramblings of a few squeaky wheels seriously...

The game is not in jeopardy simply because a few people think it is... this isnt Wikipedia, you cant toss crap against the wall and get some people to agree with you, and claim it as a fact...

                            And for this lunacy...

BF2142 has no laser guns and no zombies and no monsters in general...

It's a war simulator set in the near future...and besides, dont buy it if you dont like it, nobody will give a crap. I promise.

That's another thing that irritates me about forums... People think we care what they will and wont buy or how they feel about things. We dont, and while EA's politically correct public relations machine would like you to think they care what you think, your $50 contribution to their bottomline is so insignificant I wont even provide an analogy for it.

135 years is the near future?

                              Yeah.
Considering we've got about 5000 years of loosely recorded history under out belt, 135 is just a drop in the bucket. Think about it this way... it's only 2 lifetimes. You're grandkids are likely to still be around in 2142.

135 years is not defined as "near future" by anyone that I know. It sure as hell isn't near future for anyone posting on this board that will be dead is 2142
