    Re: The Death of a Legacy - Battlefield 1942 - Battlefield 2142

I liked the post - it reads quite bluntly of the mistakes that never get fixed every single time DICE goes through a new production iteration.
The problem is that we care about this game, how it should have been so much better in so many ways. That's why people post and debate and request change and progress.

That must be why their stock price at the moment, is within 75 cents of a 52 week high and is up over 7% today alone.

When will those business school rejects in charge of Electronic (Freaking) Arts get their heads out of their butts and realize that 500 people who give a rip about Billy's Blue-Bell Mod can turn their company around...after all, ERTS (EA's stock symbol) is on the verge of collapse...

        Consultant01,

BF2 is not the only contributing factor to EA's stock performance. If you actually read that article then you would know the following:

"Net loss for the quarter was $81 million as compared with $58 million for the prior year."

Again, I stand by my statements that they could sell more copies of BF2 if they would fully support the mod and single player community.

Seems to me like you need to pull your head out...

          Re: The Death of a Legacy - Battlefield 1942 - Battlefield 2142

lol, my point in saying that was that EA is a much bigger beast than BF2 or its piddly mods (Full conversions excluded).

They could sell more copies, how many more? Enough to make their profits swell a noticable amount?

Say..... 1000 more copies... would that make any significant impact?

What would it cost them, in man-hours to make the required changes to BF2 that would adequately support the mod community (in your estimation?)

40 hours? 80 hours? Compare that raw cost to the added benefit of a few thousand more copies sold?

I promise, with all my heart, that Electronc (freaking) Arts has teams of business analysts determining ROI (Return on Investment) for making such changes, and if they havent made them there must be a reason. Be it priorities, profitability not being there, something...

In many ways, the fact that these big companies DO ignore the minority of their customers assures that they continue to succeed.

Like it or not, BF2 was a success. Also, BF2142 is almost guaranteed to follow suit...with or without the mods.

BF2 was a big success... but could be bigger if you extend the lifetime of the game... is more cheaper to improve the game rather than release a new one dont you think?

You got a point in there...

But should the community buy this mod? thinking on better made games like Quake Wars? or even on the incomming FH2 for BF2?

So EA is betting on getting the same sucess of BF2 on 2142... I think that wont be the same thing... so probably, 2142 will become the new "BFV" of this era... and we will moving on to BF3 (I hope something WW2 related again)...

I never said BF2 was not a success. I believe it is a huge success but could be even greater. If EA/DICE opened up BF2 to the mod community I assure there would be thousands and thousands more BF2 copies sold.

I guarantee the money generated would offset the actual cost of development to do this.

What will BF3 bring, thats a great question.

I think it will be a genre shift, personally.

                    FPS? EA/Dice did that.

                    War sim? EA/Dice did that.

My money is on a 2007 release of BF3, The MMOFPS.

Take Planetside and BF2 and BF2142, mix em in a blender till the lumps are gone and the masses will flock.

Charge a subscription fee, around $9/month and give us a semi-fictional world based on the BF2142 globe/territories and we will be battling with the enemy for land that persists across time...

BF3 won't be "Just another BF game"..... I bet that BF3 is a serious shift in BF paradigm [sic]

If it only offsets it then the incentive is not there.

They could have charged $50 for SF, called it a sequel and sold much fewer copies and broken even as well...

They arent looking to "offset costs", they are a giant company, they are looking to maximize profit and I bet their stock in BF2 is all but cashed out.

Dont expect patches beyond 1.4 unless some game-breaking bug slips its way past.

Planetbattlefield.com thinks that too.. (planetbattlefield ==> Gamespy), for me is preatty sure.. but the theme is no clear yet (that's why im hoping to get a new WWII game... but MMOFPS ...)...

I dont want to THINK what kind of problems the community will encounter on BF3... programing a MMO game is far more complicated than a plain FPS, more variables, more ways to cheat, etc...

But, back on subject, FH2 probably will be THE mod (along with pirates) that will keep BF2 on the stores and on server sales... 2142 will be a Joke.

                        I doubt BF2142 will be a "joke".

If the futuristic theme is not your tasts, dont buy it, but dont hate the company for doing something you dont enjoy, that strikes me as unreasonable. I respect your opinion and the last time I checked, you will be given a chance to voice your disapproval by not buying it.

Also, making an MMOFPS based on an actual period in history leaves too many dead ends.... the war only lasted X years, and time on an MMO is typically compressed a great deal... then you run into the political issues surrounding a simulation of a war based on such things as the holocaust... what if the nazis "win"? fictional MMORPGs are much more doable because the conflicts are either imaginary (the Pan Asian Coalition) or fantasy (Orcs and Gnomes). At least, thats my opinion.

I say "2142 will be a Joke" not for the theme (pew! pew! laser guns :P ), I say is a joke cause is a mod of a handicap game... so I might be stupid if I complain all the day about BF2 and then, next week I buy BF2142 on the stores next to my house..

For me is a Joke because they are sellling the old cow as a brand new stalion. I hope the community is not that stupid.

MMOFPS along the spectrum of planetside with BF2 graphics(or hell BF:V graphics) would be ground breaking. Planetside was great, but I just cant find myself to get back into it as it seems....outdated, the gameplay seems no longer fun for me. The one thing though I would request that the game not go...too far into the future as I would love to play it but Im not the biggest futuristic fan.

Oh and PLEASE make it moddable, I know that making a game easily moddable is not the priority of most game developers, but I think in the long run it would make you customers respect you alot more and maybe even enough to continue buying your products....ya know

Also I want to see the mod that has all the big aircrafts in it that most mod teams said were too big for BF2 style maps :)

Just think of taking off from a C-130 and flying for 10 minutes to a drop zone and offloading troops than flying back to the base and doing it all again. OOH that type of stuff just makes me all giddy

edit: or oooh what about a B-52 :p
