East of the Arabian Peninsula and in the eastern region of the Middle East lies the small country of Qatar, which also happens to be home of the internationally famous news TV Station al-Jazeerah...

Is this intentional or is it just a coincidence?

I actually have cousins that live in Qatar. And the al -Jazeerah actually have their own school (i went to the football match between my cousins school and them and they won :P)

EA says that the maps are not based on actual locations

Maps are in real cities or countries, but not actual physical locations. Gulf of Oman is in the Gulf of Oman, but the small beach area in which it takes place does not exist.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, a sharqi is a dust/sand storm. It may translate to "eastern" in some language but I don't know about that.

Looks like you're right about it being Qatar though. Sort of like how wake island in game is maybe 1/20th the size of the real thing.

TOWED! Quite funny that even the places resemble real places my #1 Reason to don't stop playing BF2 even when BF2142 comes out. Real Weapons, Real Vehicles, and Almost Real Places..

theres a nuclear reactor near dalian and an oil industry in daquing, so DICE took real locations or scenarios and made playable maps with them

i've heard that karkand is a rebuilt part of bagdad..

Ok, find Zatar Wetlands, find Daquing Oilfields, find Karkand, find Songhua. Not many of these are realy places, the names are just used.

I just spent almost a year in Qatar. Sharqi has too much grass and trees and vegetation.
And I challenge ANYONE to run 200m in that heat and humidity with a full combat load. 150+ degrees with heat index factored in. That was in the middle of July. If you put a water bottle out in the sun, the cap can blow off.
