Windows 2000 pro users... thinking about XP

Ok... so I finally - after 6 years got around to finding a copy of XP Pro and installing it on my main machine. I had delayed for so long because all the machines I had seen XP installed on that didnt originally come with the OS seemed to have nothing but troubles. I guess the jury is still out on that case on my box, however I have battlefield news.

I used to average 40-45 frames per sec on 2000 pro with all settings on medium except lighting, which I set to low. After XP Pro, I am averaging 50-55 all settings on high except lighting - which is set to medium. No other changes were made to the machine (P4 2.8 Ghz, 2Gb ram ATI X850Pro).

Long story short, if you are running windows 2000, and are looking for a little boost and have access to Win XP, you may want to give it a shot. I had no inlkling that it would make THAT much diffrence... I now stand corrected.

Oh yeah silent bob... I tried the PCI Latency tool from your other post... but everything on my machine was already set to either 8 or 32... *scratches head*

AGP... ATI X850 Pro. SO far with the new "evil" OS ... *laughs again* ... it is incredibly smooth, even with all the settings jacked.

Well I do not own a legal copy of Win XP but for Win2K and i dont wanna get busted by the Men in Pink form Redmond.

I have same card with xp/sp2 runs great.

I tried XP once but got nothing but Bluescreens and lockups. I could not even boot into Safemode because after some time booting it will reboot itself. I can boot into normal mode though. huh
Must be driver related or something, i gave up after some time.
Happend with my old ATI 9800Pro and 6800GT, same MoBo though.

I really cant blame you at all SB... I took me this long to try it on my own machine, and I only did it after I cleared off one of my 160 Gb SATAs and formatted it so I could make a basic disk to try out Windows Vista (beta)... I had an extra partition left over, so I asked myself "What the hell"*shrugs*"lets try it".

I use a win2k + Vista dual boot system ATM but Vista does not run BF2 very well for me. Another Driver-related Problem i guess.

With my vista BF2 install... it is hyper dependant on whether or not there is an automated drive index or windows update going on in the background. Even with the prioity for BF2 set to "realtime", these automated function pop up in the background and really slow crap down.

I disabled most of these services. With win2k I have like 20 processes running including firewall, Antivirus, network,.... . With Vista I have like...uh 40. It eats 1GB RAM right away for the OS.
