You need an older version of BF2 to do it, 1.12 is good. First play the older version "1.12" with the settings you want and let it optimize shaders. Now go to my documents, Battlefield 2, mods, cache ("Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache)" and copy the folder you find there to the desktop it should be named something like "{D7B71EE2.....".
Install the newer patch "1.3" and let it optimize shaders, go to the cache folder again and take the newly created "D7B71EE2-" type folder you find there to desktop. Now take the first folder you pasted to the desktop the "1.12" one and put it back in the cache folder, copy the file name of the 1.3 folder which is on your desktop and paste it to the 1.12 one you just put back in the cache folder.
That should make it so it doesnt reoptimize shaders when you play, and it should play with the old 1.12 settings. Anyways tell me if it works for you cause I spent alot of time screwing around to find it, and it totally fixed mine.
