Im disgusted! new install runs worst than my old one

Hey all whats up, BF2 the problems are unbelievable,

Ok off the bat I have an old install of BF2 that runs great no stuttering, lag, and a decent framerate 40-60fps I can play @ 1024x768 or 1280x960 with no problem. So I decide one day to check my smartgart and see 8xagp is not working and I install or sorts of fixes and the agp 8x,4x still wont work. So I decide to do a clean install on a 20 gig HD just for BF2 to see if I can get a little extra out the system with the 8x agp. I install windows xp the same updates I have on the other drive, all the latest drivers, 8x agp now works:) patch 1.3 (same setup as the other old install) and now the game is pretty much unplayable with constant stutteriing pauses and freezes ( the kind of thing that when you spin around it still shows you in the same position then all of a sudden in a split second you are pointing in another direction, or you are about to take a vital shot, the enemy sees you and the game pauses the next thing you know you are dead and slamming your mouse on the table.

So my old dirty install on a 36gig raptor runs fine ( I cant even defrag the drive) but my new install on a clean OS doesnt.

AMD 3200 socket 939
gigabyte k8ns Ultra
1gig ddr
x800xt

anyone have a clue???????? Ive been trying to figure this out for like 4 days now. Please keep in mind my old install works perfect. I feel I am missing something as I tweaked my other os really well and I dont think Im remembering everything I did to it. any suggestions that may help me remember something I missed are appreciated!

tell me about it dude i had the same problem i would be walking and try to turn direction and it would freeze in one direction and all of a sudden my croosair would fly in a whole different direction it could be a variety of things maybe u have your settings up to high, some how u got to defrag, also do u have an audio device plugged in your computer that maybe isnt working well? because i had a crappy usb headset in my computer and as soon as i took it out it stopped! did u dl drivers for ur card?, did u dl drivers for ur mobo? or just try to buy a new card u cud get a decent one cheap now a days go to mwave.com and u cud get kick a#$ video cards for a good affordable price i hope i helped!!!!!!!!!!!

That 20gig hd is probably five or six years old. It may be running PIO mode, but probably running in an early UDMA. It also probably doesn't have a cache, or if it does, maybe 256kb. It's also probably running at 5400rpm.

So...geez. No wonder m8. :|:

Im using the same settings as the old install which work excellent,, no audio device, but once again its all the same equipment plugged in, just works great on the old install just not on the new one, I defragged the new install with no better results, I got the right drivers for the card and all the drivers for the mobo, this card is a monster it runs great plus its been modded with a cpu heatsink for over a year and a half maybe more I used to overclock and the core was doing over 600mhz and the memory did over 1200mhz OCed but they are not overclocked now.

Hmmm could be but the page file is disabled, but you could be right?? now you got me thinking. I got a 200gig here also but that has my music on it......... I might have to buy a new hd to test this out.......another install

Dude, you've switched from one of the three fastest HD's money can buy to one that's older that dirt. I think you'll find that's the cause when you do the swappage.

Edit: that 20gig is at least half as fast just on rpm's as your raptor. might...uh....make a tad bit of diff. :)

well I just checked the hd its a western digital 20gig 7200rpm hd with 2mb cache does this game need a raptor to run smooth?? its hard to believe that it would need one when I would guess 90 percent of desktops come with 7200rpm drives but on the other hand maybe thats why so many people have these problems.

let em see what I get maybe the 72gig raptor.

hmm. I was figuring that 20gig had a little more dated technology. You are correct in that 7200rpm and 2mb cache is industry standard these days.

...scratching my head as to what's wrong...

make sure it's being read in UDMA5, not PIO. That can sometimes happen...

If you have the ATI control center and that Micosoft.net framework, get rid of it. I had the same problem and after uninstalling those programs the game runs better and looks amazing.
