Questions from a 1st timer.

I would just like to know what to expect in terms of gameplay, community, competition and gfx. In BF2

I my self have been a Counter Strike only player since beta 3 sep 1999, and throught my years playing I have competed in 8 cal-M teams, 2 cal-I teams and most recently one cal-P team.

However I have recently been "alone" at lans with everyone else playing either BF2 or Counter Strike Source (which is an abomination in the CS series) So I decided why not give BF2.

So I am interested in what kinda of competition to expect during online, also is the community just as bad as any other 1.6 serve you join with hacking, mic spamming, and exploiting. Or are is there a level of somewhat respect throughout?

I know just about nothing on this game asides from the fact you can use planes,tanks,helicopters and various other war machines.

Graphically the game looks great aside from a few bug issues which my friends complain about. And I know ill have no problem taking on that full spec, @ 1024/768 AA max, AF max. But what is the generally accepted resolution for BF2 in my 7 years of playing 1.6 800/600 was the most widely used format.

You should certainly expect your share of noobs. Do yourself a favor, and frequent SEVERAL servers until you find the ones you like, ones that don't allow smacktards.

Shoot, Shovel and Shutup (www.clan-om.com) is my personal favorite. They don't take any crap. Glitches and hacks aren't nearly as widespread as most other online games, so don't worry about that. Just don't get so good that you'll be accused of hacking! (Happens to the good players)

If you can get into a server where you'll be in a squad, with communication and a competent commander, you'll be unstoppable. This is because generally speaking, everybody is out for themselves.

I'm an ex-CS player myself..

I always had my eye on BF2 tho and when it came out in June '05 I switched over and never looked back.

Doesn't 1.6 still have a pretty strong online presence?

Best way to see what the competition is like is to watch this video broadcast of the CAL Open championship match last Tuesday between Poppycock and Man UP.

Now correct me if I am wrong but I am not aware of any cal-i or cal-p leagues as of yet.

Also just outta sheer curiosity what kinda system setups to most people have . (AKA, post your system specs please) and also the kinda performance you are getting from that setup

CAL is now at the end of Season 3. There are currently two divisions, Open and Main. They are now discussing adding an Intermediate Division in Season 4. Currently there are about 200 teams in CAL.

I'm playing on an Athlon XP 2500+ overclocked to 3200. 1.5 gig ran and a 9800pro video card and play on medium settings, although in competition everything is on low of course.

This is not some third party game thats kinda "unsure of" , its freaking battlefield 2. its super popular, and everyone is the game to play right now.

This is not some third party game thats kinda "unsure of" , its freaking battlefield 2. its super popular, and everyone is the game to play right now.

It may have been a while but I am in the top 500 of cal-i players in the world which to me is worth it. Sorry you are wrong Counter Strike 1.6 still remains as the most played FPS online in the world. In terms of currenlty active players and per connection. You forget the world is the bigger then the US. most of SK and China dont have the money to jump on games like BF2 hence CS.

This past weekend marks a major Battlefield 2 LAN event in the United States, DirecTV CGS Invitational $30,000 debut tournament, with the winning team taking home $20,000. The tournament was setup by invitation only and includes 3 teams from the United States and 1 from Europe, each at one time champions of their respective scene.

9 members of each clan got an all expense paid trip to San Francisco to play at this LAN event which will be broadcast on DirectTV I believe Aug 24. The European team Code7, were flown in from Europe.

This is to give you an idea in which direction competition play is going.

You should start by joining a clan that competes in CAL or TWL.

Most of those clans accept really good/experienced players. It's tough getting into a CAL/TWL team when you are barely starting out. Those clans usually want someone that can go straight into a match and hold their own (as an alternate or a core player).

The only way your going to join a top clan like those in CAL Main is if they already know you by reputation and name.

But there are lots of clans in CAL and TWL that will consider new players as long as they get along with the group.
