Can't get the crouch key to reassign

I've been trying to reassign the crouch key but nothing seems to be working. It's always stays on left Ctrl. When I reassign it to another key it does not work, but it will show it reassigned to the key I want. Not sure what the console command is for binding it. Any ideas?

Reset your controls to default or go to C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0001 and delete your controls.con file, then reassign all of your controls.

This has been going on from almost day one. Sadly, Dice has patched this game to death, but chose to tweak game play instead of fixing bugs. What really doesn't make sense, is most of the gameplay tweaks in those patches, no one really asked for.
