After patching fresh install to 1.3, serious lag

First a little backstory. I originally bought BF2 about a year ago to play on my desktop. It was fun, but really my system wasn't up to spec and I eventually stopped playing it because it took so long to load.

But recently I got a new laptop with much better specs (2 gig ram, GeForce 7900 gs, 1.73 Ghz duo) and I decided to install BF2 on it. Well, everything went smoothly at first--60fps at 1600x1200 everything at max, no problem. But then I remembered that I ought to patch the game.

I installed the 1.3 non-incrimental patch, anticipating a better selection of servers, bug fixes, and new features. Instead whenever I go into a server, the framerate drops really low and I start lagging. Sometimes I get kicked as a result. Yet, when I play a single player game on my comp, it runs fine, just like it did before the patch. So it's definitely something specific to multiplayer. I updated Punkbuster and even tried installing the 1.4 beta patch but neither helped.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem, or have a possible solution?

After the install and patch did you restart your computer and defrag your system? This usually helps out but may not in your case, just a simple suggestion.

Feel like one big family with problems after patch 1.3. I have the exact same problem but ofter 1.3.

      So far I have:

Done a clean install of the game, Turned page file off, turned it on, moved the page file to a new hdd and alocated 4gb to it (I have 2gig of ram), Updated punkbuster, defragged hdd, ran memtest, turned all graphics setting to low, put them back to where i used to have them, turned off VOIP, turned off EAX, created a new admin account and played the game under that account, tried in the morning, tried in the evening, thied different servers, logged memory usage to see if i am running out which i'm not.....I'm sure theres more but my fingers are getting tired.

Last night I turned on the in game frame rate indicator (renderer.drawfps 1)and it said 65/20 fps which is no different to what I had post 1.3 when the game ran as smooth as silk. The choppiness now makes the game unplayable.

Don't know what to do next. EA's advice didn't work. Maybe just play something different until they fix the bugs? The strange part however is that there seem to be heaps of people with probs and heaps without

Now i'm confused. On bf2 as we speak playing wake island . We only have 1 flag to spawn at so you can imagine the caos and the game is running smooth as silk with no choppiness>

      ?????

Re: After patching fresh install to 1.3, serious lag

The wierd thing is, when I first load the level and join the game (before I pick my spawn point), it runs fine for anywhere between 0-2 seconds, and then starts to get choppy. It's as though it only slows down when all the online players are loaded, but before then it runs fine.

My ping is high (since I'm playing over a home wireless network) but not astronomical, and at any rate the choppyness seems more like a low frame rate than a jerky lag type phenomenon. It's not my CPU either, as that stays around 25% on Task Manager. Also, I know it is neither the graphics nor sound settings because I set both to the lowest possible and the choppyness persists.

When I show the fps using renderer.drawfps, it says 15.0/66.7 always. Is that normal? I'm not really sure how to interpret those numbers as I would expect the framerate to fluctuate somewhat but it always shows it being steady.

        Man, this problem is annoying.

EDIT: I just tried playing single player and the framerate fluctuates normally between 40-60, as I expected. Now why would it be rock solid at the above levels during multiplayer, while seeming more like 4-6 fps at most in actuality?

EDIT2: After fooling around some more, I'm pretty sure that this is in fact some kind of lag issue. But the lag is so severe that it's making me think it's just rendering too slow (which it's not). After installing the patch, my ping is usually around 100-200, which is pretty high. But still, I wouldn't think that would cause such a serious problem.

do a defrag and disk cleanup i have a different way to defrag i use the diskeeper which is twice as better as a regular defrag but a regular defrag shud solve your problem

Defrag didn't help, nor would I expect it to since my problem only occurs during multiplayer games, not single player. Thus it is not a graphics or system resources problem but rather something related to the way I am connecting to the servers.
