    A couple questions for pilots

    2 questions:

    What causes the "streamers" from both wings behind your jet as you fly? I know when I am chasing someone sometimes I see there trail and can follow that right too them. I suspect it may happen when AB are on but not sure.


    What view do you mostly fly in? I have heard some of the better pilots say they fly in F12 fly bye view most of the time. What would be the advantage to that?

    The "streamers" are usually caused by sharp turns on high speed.
    F12 view is useful in a dogfight when you're being chased to see whats the plane that's chasing you doing, tho I prefer to use the usual back looking view(forget which F is that because it's assigned to a button on my joystick)

      They're the animation for wingtip vortices...basically water vapor condensation trails off the tips of the wings. Has nothing to do with the after burners.

        The air on the surface of the wing cools down a lot with sharper turns. Kind of like a fast stream, where water is cold. This condensates the water leaving while trails.

          So I guess the only way not to leave them when being chased is to slow down.

            Hmm! Damnit, I never slowed down for THIS particular reason, but I think youre right. They dont appear in slower movevemnt. I usually went straight as soon as I got out of the chasers line of sight to cover the contrails.

              One more reason to slow down in a dogfight.

                If you have a joystick I would suggest you set a button for every view. Thats how i have it, every single view has a key in my joystick. Sometimes I dont remember which is which so I constantly find myself pressing all of them sometimes resulting in a crash

                    Wings create lift by the lowering the pressure of the air flowing over the top of them. This low pressure sucks the wing up toward it. Lowering the pressure of the air reduces it's tempature, if it gets lowered below the dew point the water condences and you see the vapor trails.

                    The vortices form as a result of the pressure difference top to bottom of the wing. The low pressure above the wing sucks some of the air from the bottom over the edge of the wing. As this air is rounding the edge of the wing, the wing continues to move foward and past, leaving this air to continue to spirle in its wake.

                    The solution to stoping these from forming is to decrease the amount of pressure differential being produced. Notice that if you fly straight with no input the trails will stop.

                      If you go STRAIGHT, and don't touch anything, the jet contrails don't show up.

                      That is why, when I am gaining altitude and someone is looking for me, I go straight up so they don't see the trails, but of course, if they already saw me, the trails don't matter.

                      Doesn't matter how fast you go, you just gotta go straight.

                        Thanks for the reply Metallica. I agree with you but I am thinking that a major contibutor is altitude. Since the air is much thinner at higher altitudes I would assume less contrails are left.

                        Also no one has touched on the views they use while flying??

                          I use a combination of looking behind me mixed fly-by.

                            Thanks for the reply metallica. Interesting that none of the other hard core pilots chimed in on this thread even though I am sure they have seen it. Me thinks the views may be the key to moving up to the next level.

                              Interesting stuff, thanks for that. Plus, it's interesting that the devs applied this to the game when not many of us would know thats how they work in the real world.
