Caveat - this is not a demand for BF2 now, merely a lament as to what should have been and a request for future Battlefield games
To my mind, it's another case of something that should have been in BF2 out of the box - that all combat vehicles require 2 players to use at 100% effectiveness. It seemed like a natural evolution to me.
BF1942 - all singleplayer vehicles but tanks were not very effective
BFV - helicopters and APCs require 2 players to use them :)
BF2 - some vehicles do, some don't
:)
It doesnt make sense to me that a game that promoted teamwork so much would have ignored vehicles to such a huge extent. Attack helicopters (solo tv missile operation is an exploit and should not be in the game - you leave the pilots seat? The vehicle comes to a stop like any other), transport technicals, buggies, ribs, transport choppers all applied this system.
Armour and jets did not
APCs and Tanks could have had a driver with control over smoke and an electronic HUD identifying enemy vehicles much like the jets have now, and a gunner with control over the main 20mm gun and the TOWs engaging targets that the pilot identified
Jets should either have all been bombers and removed all ground attack weapons except for the 20mm cannon in favour of the gunner
OR
have had an A10 in bomber config with low cannon ammo with a buddy fighter escort F18 or F35b with 8 AAMs and high cannon ammo.
In the spirit of improving the game if other things are still being improved, this area can and should be improved. It appeals to every aspect of what DICE's stated aims for the game are.
It enforces teamwork - you can still go solo in these vehicles but you'll quickly regret not taking a gunner.
It requires skill - getting into a rhythm with a vehicle partner is not easy and very very rewarding, you only have to look at how amazing the team aspect of the AH and the bomber is when a team of 2 uses it to its potential
It brings balance - Armour and jets would be properly balanced then. Why is a combat vehicle so hard to kill? Because it has 2 players working together inside it - you kill it, you get 2 kills. The hard work bringing down a combat vehicle is then justified by the reward.
Simple. Effective. True to BF2.
In fact the only negatives that will come up are complaints of people who do not want to operate as a team. Too bad - you are only as good as your team in a team game - you get a good gunner as a pilot and you are rewarded for it in points and personal satisfaction. You get a newcomer? You teach him to be a better player - that is why BF2 is a team tactical game and not a deathmatch arena. That is what makes it the best.
