I have an Audigy 2 ZS sound card, and the seek for a solution started because after I joined a game, after 10-15 seconds I got a quick freeze and most of times it caused my sound to go completely bugged, missing sounds, crackling and strange noises.

So, maybe it can be a quick freeze here, but can be a longer freeze on other systems. Give it a try...
Its a Punkbuster related issue, downloading a new Punkbuster .dll and replacing the original has fixed my problems. Backup the original file, and try the new one.
Now when I join the game, the freeze is like 100 ms long, you can almost ignore it.
No more audio problems, or join/freeze problems, for me
