    intermittent stutter problem, help please!

    Hi,

I've searched but found no definitive answers for this problem.

I recently transplanted my x800xl into another computer: AMD Dual Opteron 246 64, with 1GB DDR RAM. It has a BFG 650w PS

I'm getting MUCH better framerates and everything would be perfect except for the intermittent pause/stutter. It just seems to lock up for about a tenth of a second or so every few seconds. Seems to happen more when turning. It also makes the sound cut out/ back in when it happens.

I don't get the stutter at all when trying single player 16 player maps. Is ther a way to bump single player up to 64 or 32 players?

I have updated all of the MB, Video, Nic, etc drivers. I yanked my sound card. No Love...

I figured it MUST be a PB lag problem so i manually updated it with pbsetup.exe. No love....

Any other ideas? WHen I first installed the game yesterday it seemed to be running fine. Maybe uninstall/reinstall?

oh, and I'm running medium settings at 1024x768

    Thanks in advance!!!

Get another gig of ram, 2GB is needed for smooth play at high settings.

It still could be ram. It could also be punkbuster checking your hard drive for cheats, to make this happen less often:

        from bf2lag.com

Punkbuster, as you probably know, is the anti cheating software which comes bundled with BF2 and is required to play on all ranked servers and most public servers. Punkbuster scans your hard-drive for problems every 20 seconds. As you may have guessed, this causes a lot of lag. What we are going to do is to increase the amount of time in between punkbuster checks to 500 seconds (the maximum amount so don't try anything higher lol). By the way, in case you were worried, this is 100% safe with punkbuster, and will NOT cause any problems with Punkbuster thinking you are a cheater. Punkbuster even recommends this on their website.

        How do you do it?

Step 1: Ok, the first step is very simple, join any BF2 online server which is running punkbuster, preferably a ranked one.

Step 2: Once you are in, and respawned somewhere, press the ` key. This key is located on most keyboards above the tab key and to the left of the 1 key

Step 3: Once you have pressed this, a large white box should drop down with a load of text in it. Type "pb_sleep 500" (without the quotation marks) and hit the enter key

Step 4: Once you have done this, make sure the box is still up and type pb_writecfg to save your settings
I haven't needed to do this myself, but it does help some people so good luck.

I tried the pbsleep command and the problem still persists. I haven't used that since bf 1942! The thing is that it feels like the pb lag I used to get in bf 1942.

Hmm..odd that you're getting the '1 GB or less stutter' when you're not using high graphics options.

Try settings up a gaming login for XP:

You may have to use your current log in for gaming and create a NEW one for regular use as BF2 gets rather pissy when you try and play under a second Windows XP account.

The services tweaks will give you the best results.

well, no stutter at 16 player but stutter at 32 and 64. its a common scenerio, playing online is laggier. and the more people there are playing on the server the more stuttering you will get.

i think i fixed it. I had installed a spyware removal/detection app called spysweeper. Once I removed it and a program called window washer the stutters went away.

thanks for all the help. Maybe this will help someone down the road.
