    Loading problem

Up until about a day ago, BF2 has been working fine for me. I've had some CTDs and "There is a problem with connection" issues like the rest of us, but, for the most part, the game's been running fine.

However, as of right now, I can't connect to any servers. What used to be about a minute or two of wait time to load has become ten minutes. The loading bar moves at a snail's pace, and when it finally does complete, I never get passed "Verifying Client Data..." I either get the error "Your connection to the server has been lost" or "Netword data corruption error." Not only do I get those errors, it takes upwards of five to ten minutes of "Verifying Client Data" to get them. That is, I wait at that screen for ten minutes only to get an error. I've tried twice, then waited about an hour and tried again, to no avail.

However, *sometimes* the game manages to load...after the ten minutes of loading. Beyond that point, the game plays perfectly fine (as in, the way it normally does for me in-game). But it still takes forever to load and it still takes as long when the next map comes rolling around.

Just to let you know, I have NO background tasks running at all, and I've been playing this game for about a month perfectly (well, save for the 1.3 issues) fine. I've scanned for viruses and spyware and have rebooted the computer numerous times.

As of a day later, I've also manually updated Punkbuster, thinking maybe that was the issue, and have unistalled + reinstalled AGAIN. I've run spyware checks and virus checks, as well. This happened so abruptly, too. One minute, I was playing fine, on Wake Island 2007 (this was the last map I played which loaded normally, I believe). I finish the round and exit the game and go about my own business. I come back ~two hours later, and the load times seemed to have tripled.

The loading bar always seems to pause/slowdown at certain % during the loading, namely 13-15% then 47-50%, then 62%, I've noticed. Then it's a ten minute wait for "verifying client data." Although, today, when I tried, it took forever to load the first map (like I said). I then played out the game that I joined. After the round ended, another map began to load. To my surprise, the loading bar moved at its normal pace...only to hit a roadblock at "verifying client data," where, once again, it's another ten minute wait.

I'm getting REALLY frustrated at this now. It's almost not worth it to even try and join games. I have to wait ten-twenty minutes, so I usually go upstairs and do something to occupy myself. And then I find that I no longer have the desire to play the map for a round or two, only to endure ANOTHER loading time.

Thanks for any help at all.

      Re: Loading problem

Well, I've closed all background tasks (including spysweepers and the like) before I run it, so I'd assume that that isn't the case. It seems the game ONLY slows down during the loading times and it seems that Verifying client data is the thing that really takes forever (the loading bar itself will fill up in a minute or two, still slower than before, but the Verifying part takes the upwards of ten minutes).

          Re: Loading problem

Oh, I guess I forgot to mention that. When it firsted started late yesterday, I couldn't load the maps. Always got those connection errors/corrupt data. Now the maps *usually* load, still after the ten minutes of loading.

The thing is, I have a medium system (AMD 3200+, ATi Radeon x700 AGP, and a gig of RAM). I'd understand if I had maybe 512 mb of RAM or something. But I've been running the game fine, with two to three minute load times (including the verifying part) for about a month since I got the game. Now those load times have increased, but my system sure as hell hasn't degenerated. It's relatively new, actually (maybe a little over a year, year and a half, old).

try joining either servers with little pings or servers with less people?

              Re: Loading problem

I typically only join servers stationed in the US (and I typically get < 50-70 ping on most servers relatively in the US). I've tried joining servers with 63 other people, I've tried joining servers with 8 other people. Still the same load times. And when I finally do join, I have my < 50-70 ping.

I've also tried setting my quality (textures, lighting, etc) to Low, and still the load times persist.

Also note that I get the same problem loading a single player game.

                  Re: Loading problem

(I'm pretty sure I have this lumped in somewhere in my above posts) Well, for what it's worth:

                  AMD Athlon 64 3200+
                  ATi Radeon x700 AGP
A gig of RAM (dunno what type)
                  Windows XP Home Edition

As of now, I've also defragged my harddrive, and cleaned up my C drive (where the game itself does not reside, but Windows and all that jazz does). Just to let you know, this is a family computer, so I don't really want to half to resort to reformatting it. Like I said, my computer's only a year, year and a half at the oldest. Remember that it was working fine until yesterday. Also, I dunno if I said this, but sometimes, when I manage to get into a map, I play it out. Plays fine. Then, sometimes, when the next map loads, the load bar moves at its normal pace. But then it hits a roadblock at the Verifying Client Data.

I know this might now be much help but, have you tried updating the videocard drivers? Maybe try applying the FULL 1.3 patch again. It seems to work for some people. I wish I could be more helpful...

                      Re: Loading problem

I've updated my drivers. I'll try reinstalling the patch, I guess. I got nothing to lose now.

EDIT: Nothing. Still loading as slow as ever. What's really frustrating is that the game plays FINE outside of those atrocious load times that literally come out of nowhere. I can barely play the game now, with the 10+ minute wait in between loading. I either end up going upstairs to occupy myself while the game loads and then I lose interest. Or I join, play the 1 or 2 rounds on that map, and then sit through another 10+ minute load time.

I've also noticed that this is the only game in which the load times are taking forever. I just loaded games of Oblivion, F.E.A.R., HL2, and Civ4 and they all loaded at the normal speed, if that means anything.

Hey Blarg, give this website a look through. There might be something that may be helpful to you. I told a friend about this problem and he referenced that site to me:

                          Re: Loading problem

I think I've seen that site before. Looks familiar. Anywho, running through that list, I've either done everything or my system is good.

I have the latest patch. I am not using borderline video cards. I can run the game at default resolution. I've manually updated PB. I've got a supported vid card. I have a gig of RAM (which, at one point, was enough to run this game perfectly fine). I've cleared the cache, optimized shaders, and then defragged. And I don't have any AA on and I'm not running any background tasks.

God. It's like this magical problem appeared out of nowhere and refuses to go away. Thanks for your help, though.

Some people swear that clearing the logocache speeds up their loads, may as well give it a try since its something that may not have been deleted in your uninstall.

                              Re: Loading problem

The logo cache? In the Mydocs/Battefield2/Logocache folder? I'll give it a try. It doesn't affect anything?

EDIT: Ok, I dunno if that had anything to do with it, but now the LOADING bar is moving at normal pace. Normally, it used to fill up in ~1 minute or less. When the loading times spiked, it took ~2 minutes. Now it's back to ~1 minute. But, Verifying client data still takes forever (it used to be a quick minute or two, as well. Now it's like 10 minutes of waiting), which leads me to believe that punkbuster is acting up, as that part is when punkbuster filters through some files to see if you're cheating. I have not edited ANY of the files in ANY way and I've manually updated PB.

I also LOVE CTDs now more than ever. Nothing makes me happier then waiting 10+ minutes for a map to load, only to get a CTD. I love it. Also, the load bar seems to move at a random pace. Sometimes it'll fill up fast, sometimes it won't. Regardless, the biggest problem I have is the verifying client data part. Is there ANYTHING that would make that shorter? I've uninstalled before and manually updated PB. I've also set PB scans to the max time, as instructed in the sticky optimization topic.

                              I guess no one's got any suggestions...;_;
