There's a few out already though I don't know the really popular ones. Have a look at the Bf2 mods section of fileplanet, that lists what's popular, etc. COuld be a good place to start.

Prmm is my fav - bit serious though needs new patch 1.4, NAW is a more fun - blackhawk with front cannon & 24 rockets :). OPK tried a little no verdict yet.

Battle Racer :-) It's a bit different from the usual mods but it's great fun.

By the way, if you're downloading lots of mods to try out, try using Bitorrent, I find it's much much faster then the standard download sites. You can pause and resume too. If a mods popular it's likely that it'll have seeders and most mods seemd to have Bitorrent download links.

The best (imgo) client is Azureus - Google for it

PRMM looks good but I got it and it kept crashing to desktop in populated servers but I could get into empty ones.

They also gave me ZERO support in fixing the issue so I wiped it out and now think they are crap.

EDIT/ I have no problems with Vanilla crashing.
