Hey im running the 91.31 Drivers. Didn't think that was the problem because my friend is running it just fine and he has a Gigabyte Geforce 7600GS with those drivers.

Role back to the previous drivers

If that doesnt work, reinstall BF2 and reinstall the FULL 1.3 patch, not the incremental

Different driver, different outcome. If you are feeling experimental, I have found a procedure elsewhere that may work for you.

go to your windows hosts file and delete any bf2 reference in there.

The path is C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ Just open the hosts file with notepad and remove the reference there.

              report back.

Ok guys rooled back my drivers to 84.43 Forceware, re-installed the game and applied the 1.3 patch, after the patch it still doesn't open at all so re-installed again and it still freezes and crashes after about 5 seconds of playing. I dont know if i have the full or incremental patch but its filename is bf2_patch_103 and its 171MB.
Also the are no references to Battlefielld 2 in that hosts file.
This really sucks im really not having any luck with this game...

The incremental updates have been linked to many a problem. See if someone else will download it and burn it to a disk for you.
