and am disappointed that all the posters here were giving advice on ways for the OP to cheat his employer
what happened to honor and integrity????
guess he also thinks it's ok to cheat/hack/macro away = right?
I mean = if you are going to dis your employer - might as well dis your community of friends?

That is hardly a reasonable comparison. Most people who work are essentially being forced to in order to live. Why should that cause you to have any real loyalty to your employer? Sure, if you're lucky enough to have an employer that shows some loyalty to you it should be returned but how many companies do that? You only need to appear loyal enough to get promoted or keep from getting fired.

I know its not the same, but why can't this "friend" play SP at work to at least get some practice in and not run the risk of upsetting the boss? There are plenty of mods to enable 64 player maps on SP for flying practice etc.

Im not sure if this works but it definately gets around game-monitor displaying your online status: throw in a prefix and GM doesn't notice you.

Just claim that you (or your friend or whatever) are using your (oh screw it) downtime to preform bandwidth tests. By playing a bandwidth sensitive on-line game, your trained eye can pick up any fluctuations in bandwidth or disruptions in service.

I play regularly during the job. My boss knows, and he's absolutely ok with it.
My collegues are also fine with it, and have their own share of games installed on company computers
I do make sure that work comes first though, and my network has absolute No1 priority over anything else. But there are many hours where I am just idling, and waiting for a server task to complete. That's when I fire up BF2 or some other game to waste the time.
We sometimes even have small LAN parties at work ´- my boss joins them on a regular basis .
I do have to say though that I work a lot of overtime, and most days I work for about 10hrs, play for 1-3hrs. So usually those are 12 to 14 hours shifts.
And I would not be playing if there was anything else important to do, or if I wasn't needing a small break from work.
But there have also been days where I was able to spend a whole shift playing online, and had NOTHING going on besides being on standby and letting the serverscripts do their thing.

From what I've heard such circumstances in a job would not be possible for example in the US.
I really like it because it creates a very friendly and loose atmosphere without losing focus on the professional side.

And I don't feel like I'm stealing from anybody while doing this.

Also - why should my....uh...friend sit at hom waiting for a phone call when he's got nothing to do? may as well get some BF goin until the phone rings. Who's getting hurt?

Do I condone stealing? That's a false analogy. My friends company pays him to do a job, not for his time. That's why he's salary and on call. His job must be different than yours. If he was payed hourly, yeah then it MAY in some remote sense of the word be considered stealing.

Greg, chill out.
salaried employees get no overtime, are on call ALL the time, and rarely get perks such as described above.
I am a business owner, and have 14 people under me doing various tasks at any given time. Several of them game, others browse ebay, still others read/eat/talk on the phone, and I have no problem with it. My people are motivated and happy, and they put the job first. I have very low turnover (highly unusual in my business) and consistently post better results each year. Part of this is because I don't care what they do on their own time, provided that the job gets done. If I come by and they're shooting MEC planes out of the sky, I know it's because they've already finished everything that was required of them that day and/or are waiting for someone to get back to them. Trust fosters trust fosters performance fosters morale. I'm hella glad you're not my boss...
