To play (1.3) or not to play, that is the question

I posted this on the Planet Battlefield forum and I'm going to post here too to see what the general consensus is.

I've taken a month and a half break from BF2 (first the news of all the 1.3 problems and then exams, so I didn't have a chance) and it is killing me that I haven't played in so long- I used to be on every day. I really want to get back but is 1.3 playable at the moment or do I have to wait for 1.4.

I still have patch 1.22 installed and everything played well. Do I update to 1.3 now (probably full patch? heard it's less problems) or do I hold off another while until 1.4.

I don't want to be pulling my hair out with more problems with 1.3 as it stands right now. The game played pretty well before.

I know from occassional visits here that the Server Browser issue was slightly improved. Are there still regular CTDs, connection problems, etc. or are those bareable?

If I patch to 1.3 now, will my BF2 experience be still a good one or will I be faced with a bunch of problems and wait till 1.4 (whenever that may be)?

Patch to 1.3 now (full patch) or wait till 1.4?

Well, the 1.4 patch will be released soon enough now that the Beta version has been released. I play in 1.3 and I'm not pulling my hair out.

Re: To play (1.3) or not to play, that is the question

It's killing me- I've been away from the game for a month and a half and I'm dying to play again.

If you're not having any serious issues, which patch did you use? I've been told using the FULL patch will save me a lot of grief (but I never had problems with an incremental before). Anyways, a full patch is probably what I'll do.

And if it crashes or gives me grief like connection problems or bugs, I'll wait till 1.4 and then play again. I guess it's better to TRY to see if it will work than sitting here wishing I'd play lol

I am not going to go as far as 1.3 being unplayable, at least for most people. It kinda depends, I know people who have installed 1.3 and have had no problems...then there are other people...and well you know what has happened to them.

I don't really think you will know how your computer will take it unless you do it.

I voted "1.3 is playable, but only after you do some things (please explain below)"
-Well first of all Use the 1.3 FULL patch. Don't use the incremental.
-Second, I Would make a copy of all your BF2 related things right now.
--Make a backup copy of your Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 folder, rename it, and put it somewhere else.
--Make a backup copy of your My Documents\Battlefield 2 folder, rename it, and put it somewhere else.
--Make a backup of your registry.
-Next, make a system restore point.

Ok, now you’re done. If you do all this, then even if your BF2 totally craps out after 1.3 you can go back and replace everything.

Well, good luck and happy playing.

the #1 that ticks me off is the Crashes to the Desktop, happens a lot recently, and when you join a server, its all listed 0

Karkand Hotel GLitch, if you never heard of it, it can be only acessed through 1.3 patch, the new feature of vehicle drops, allows you to drop a vehicle and drive it through the hotel wall, and youre inside the building, you can kill others outside but they cant kill you.

          Red name tag glitch
More in the 1.3 patch, about 2-3 i see in every server i see.

Tren, If I try the game again before 1.4, I will be sure to use the FULL patch.

One thing- what is the point of making all those backups? If the patch ends up working like garbage, what is the point of restoring the backup? If it doesn't work well, I would wait until 1.4 because obviously I'm not going to be playing 1.22.

And how do you make a backup of the registry?

Re: To play (1.3) or not to play, that is the question

I've just recently got back into BF2 after a 6 month break. I did a clean install of BF2, SF, 1.3 patch, and haven't noticed any more frequent problems then when I stopped playing back in 1.2

Sure car-tillary was annoying at first, now I know when I'm in an area I should expect it and watch for it. If I'm playing sniper, I always keep my "e" key pressed if I'm purched on a roof top. If I'm capping a flag, I'm ready to run away while a vodnik lands on the pole and explodes, etc...

Wow... Play the game. They haven't screwed it up enough to make it unplayable. You either like the game or you don't. I wish people would stop complaining about it. It could be worse.

Re: To play (1.3) or not to play, that is the question

Guys on Planet BF whined about the patch so much when it first came out so that's what turned me off of the patch. "Crashes, lag, damn server browser ffs, problem with connection, wtf is with Punkbuster, I can't log in aargh, etc." Any of that true right now?

I guess I'll have to try it for myself maybe tomorrow and if it works fine (a crash here and there is OK I guess) but worst case scenario if it is acting up I'll shelf it again until 1.4 is out.

I like these forums, seem more mature and less sarcastic- here's a classic response:

UPDATE 1: I just patched to 1.3 (full patch)... well about 5 hours ago.

I installed the patch, turned on the game, and logged in. I found a random server, loaded it up, and made sure to wait a little while before clicking Join Game because I know there is a problem with that.

I entered the game. Played 15 rounds (each map twice, but I quit at Sharqi after having enough) on that 32 player server. Loaded Wake Island. Played fine. Loaded Kubra Dam. Played fine. Loaded Dalian Plant. Played fine. Loaded Mashtuur City. Played fine. Loaded Gulf of Oman. Played fine. Loaded Daquing Oilfields. Played fine. Loaded Strike at Karkand. Played fine. Loaded Sharqi Peninsula. Played fine. Quit after 1 round... I've been on the game for 4.5 hours.

So I played for 4.5 hours. Straight. Not a single "Problem with your Connection." Not a single CTD. No red tag bug that I saw. It played flawlessly, albeit sometimes a little laggy for whatever reason, but my ping was still 35.

So far NO PROBLEMS with full 1.3, but maybe it was that I found a perfect server where the game plays perfectly.

I'll play again tomorrow and hopefully the same result.

SO FAR, I don't think there's anything wrong with 1.3. I never had a problem with "cartillery" but I found the vehicle drop was a very helpful feature on maps like Daquing Oilfields when I was out in the middle of nowhere.

I'm happy with the patch so far.
