    10 (9+*) Things From BF2 that I REALLY Want Fixed in BF2142

(also posted in the Game Feedback forum)

I'm not going to roll in here threatening DICE with promises of 2142 boycott if these things aren't addressed, but I will say that there are some issues that really do matter to me. Issues that, if left wholly unchecked, might very well dissuade me from purchasing another game in the franchise - especially with incoming competition from other games in the same genre.

There are a lot of things about BF2 that are good, but some things just make me want to Alt-F4.

DICE. Are you going to fix:
    1. Parked vehicles sliding down even the slightest grade. This is particularly annoying when you're defending using a transport vehicle, since you have to keep re-aiming as your car slides. By the way, this is been around since BF1942, so I think you've had time to figure out a solution. Here's hoping that tires have tread on them in 2142.
      -
    2. Poor (inconsistent) hit detection. I'll say it again because it's a big friggin deal. Hit detection. How... many... times... do... I... have...to... knife... this... guy... in... the... face...before... he... dies. This goes for guns, too.

We need a more accurate connection between what we think we're doing, and what the server thinks we're doing. We tolerated it with BF2. Please don't punish us more.
      -
    3. Excessive vehicular damage from terrain. If the real DPVs had such lame suspensions, our real military would never get anywhere because they'd all die in fiery explosions just outside the bases. It's an off-road vehicle for military use. Give it some suspension travel. Please. Goes for all ground vehicles.

We shouldn't be able to drive off of a cliff and survive, but it's a game - we want to drive fast, jump little hills, and do crazy drifts without crippling our vehicles in the process.
      -
    4. Maps that exclude entire classes or playstyles. Support + Daqing Oilfields = boredom or nightmare, depending on the determination of the player. How about an infantryman trying to take/defend flags on Gulf of Oman, where every CP is directly and intimately armor-accessible? (Remember that there are very few protected places to hide, and most of the vehicles have blast radii on their weapons anyway)

Please make your maps more consistently well-rounded. Every playstyle/kit should be able to contribute on every map, in some way.
      -
    5. Control points that really don't matter. "Good job team, we took a flag and gained - a jeep!" Yes, taking enough points causes ticket bleed, but that's weak. I want objectives to affect the gameplay, not just the score.

I'm not sure if any of your team has played Planetside (though from the 2142 planning, I'm guessing that you have) but the bases in that game mattered. Taking one meant gaining a wealth of resources and capabilities. It was a way of holding large parts of the map because the defenses had reach. The bases had presence.

Some control points in BF2 (actually most, for that matter) can be entirely ignored, and that's lame.
      -
    6. Flora (aka the environment) interferes with (aka doesn't help) the game experience. Grass and trees suck. Bad. We can't walk through the bundles of trees (leaving us to feel our way around and through them, like blind rats in a maze) and the grass? Ugh, grass.

Grass is only visible from very close. Thus, players "hiding" in grass feel hidden and have their view obscured by dense foliage, but opposing players don't see the grass at all and can see the "hidden" player quite clearly - making hiding in vegetation more of a self-imposed handicap than an immersive gameplay element.
      -
    7. Feet stick through walls. You knew this was coming. It's as old as the BF franchise, and it stands as the most ridiculous, pervasive faux pas in the game. Nothing cheapens a game experience quite like being able to knife a guy's toes which happen to be, magically, sticking out of a solid concrete wall.

I read a DICE response once about why this happens, but I don't really care why it happens. I'm a designer, not a developer. But most people are neither. Most of us just want it fixed.
      -
    8. Voting. I didn't even have to state this one in the form of a problem, because the entire voting system is broken - I need only utter the name. I think that the BF2 voting system represents one of the most well-intentioned and horribly-broken elements in the game. I don't have a clear vision of how to fix it, but it needs fixing.
      -
    9. Jumping in the narrow space between a vehicle and a building will result in death. Ah yes. I love the death pinch. If I recall, this has also been around since BF1942. The wall isn't moving. The vehicle isn't moving. So how did I manage to get into the space between two objects, but then somehow die from being smashed between the same two static objects? I'd also include the bail-out-of-car-which-immediately-slides-into-me-and-I-die maneuver, which is equally as annoying.

I don't get it. All I know is that it cheeses me off when I'm trying to make a heroic entrance and I bail out, jump over the hood, and my own car kills me - wee, 15 seconds of waiting for the opportunity to drive back to the same location.
      -
    10. <*> This is the wildcard. We all have some top-of-mind issues that we consider most important, and although I could write a #10 for myself (and #11-50 probably), I'd rather hear about your own critical issues - you might have something that I forgot, or that I don't know a lot about. But it might really matter. So, go nuts.

And DICE - what say you? :)

Bring on QW i say. EA/DICE have had plenty time to fix BF2 but was obviously beyond their skills/dedication/whatever!
KUDOS to Dice for making (probably) the the best/most advanced/ indepth game you can buy! But due to the lack of support and the recent absolute f**k up of a patch (which they admit, 1.4 public beta) the testers did not fully test 1.3!
If EA were to have put some full dedication into BF2 to make it even better than it is now, as in bug free, they would have gained huge respect from a dedicated FPS PC community.
I know BF2 is a needle in a haystack for EA due to xbox360, ps2 and ps3 coming soon but i think if they were to get BF2 perfected they would gain so much respect.
Instead i anticipate the release of QW and will not buy BF2142

You pretty well summed it up with what you have said already. I really dispise the fact that body parts stick out of walls. A game of this nature should not have texture flaws like that which effect gameplay.

One other thing that bothers me is how a jet sees you before you see them. If your in Anti Air and a jet is coming then chances are you dead. Pretty much makes it useless unless the person flying is useless. Give us some useful ground defense for gods sake. I lock on almost every single time if i actually do survive and i can never hit damn jets. Well I do rarely but very rarely. It's great against helos. But if your gonna put something in the game at least make it useful for what it was designed for. But I can't really complain.

Re: 10 (9+*) Things From BF2 that I REALLY Want Fixed in BF2142

        1. I actually don't think this is something DICE considers needing a solution. Since I believe it was purposely put into the programing. It's there as well as well as tank rock when firing, to keep peices of equipment from becomming insanely accurate artillery .

In 42' if a tank didn't rock (or artillery for that matter) you could pound one single spot (airport plane spawns) blindly all day. You could also "pixel shoot" from the vehicle's respawn point by putting a dot on your screen with a marker once the spot is found. You woudn't even need the feed back of a spotter.

With Jeeps in BF2 you could find a "sweetspot" out of sight of weapons and pound it all day. That's why mounted MG's are not put in spots that have many many accesable targets (in sight or out of sight).

There are somethings you just can't do, or worse, if you could do them it would really screw things up.

        2. Randomness creates chaos, chaos is solved by team work. Twitchy shooters have come and gone, I wouldn't want to have 2142 go back to that. Although it might and it might be fun, but it wouldn't be different like the BF series has been.

        3. Yeah that is kind of whacky. I think some damage should occur. If your going to slide a tank down the side of a mountain and take a very obscure route you should pay something for doing it. Should less damage occur? No I think it's fine where it is.

        4. If you get your wish with 2, you couldn't possibly get your wish for this one.

        5.

Personally I play for a team win, so this type of veiw of the game, I can't comprehend. But we do have a point and rank system some people love. I think it's screwed up the game more then made it good, to encourage anything other then teamplay even more, won't help. But that's opinion and game style preference.

        6. Agreed. Doesn't make much sense to render all that grass and have it be two different things from two different perspectives.

        7. Agreed. But I have no idea if there's a solution. I may still be a limitation of the BF engine.

        8. Agreed. Didn't work well in 42' unless very heavily scripted (max revote time, total votes started limit), and even then it wasn't very effective. Abused more then anything. It's a great concept on paper I've just never seen it in action very often doing what it was intended to do, which is self-policing.

        9. Disagrree. There are too many people already crossing the street without looking, and not treating vehicles like things people drive with limited views. Which they are in BF2. Although you have many views, you can only have one on at a time. I can see people trying to "Thread the Needle" and punishing drivers for barely moving when they get TK'd. Probably an engine limitation too.

        10. Less accuracy (probably doesn't apply for 2142's genre but)

Force people to use cover and the abundant scenery as part of their game. As it stands now any type of stealth or tactical advantage is quickly wiped away by too much "twitchiness" in the weapons.

10b Get rid of hopping/leaping Period.

RogueSpear hand a climb option, or use key. The character would do a sort of military style press with their body and heave themselves "up". You were vunerable when you did it, like a climbing a ladder. You could still design maps with obstacles and places to go, similar to what we have now. This would eliminate all the stupid hopping which I find a massive distraction to the immersion of this series. I don't think good players, even the "rambo" guys, would refuse to play a game with no hopping. If one can't do it, we all can't.

This would also force more team play and a more tactical use of the maps. If you can't rambo with insane hit detection, then hop like crazy, your less likely to rush rush rush with no abandon.

10c. No UCB's. None. Now there's no confusion, each spawn point is a legitimate objective. The most valuable ones will be protected and defended with great effort. And hopefully teamwork.

Lets get back to the good ole days.

In order for that to work, the levels would have to be even for both teams. Imagine if the Essex was cappable on Wake? USMC would be f*cked in less than 5 minutes. Level design should make the odds even for both armies.

                10:
Don't remove hopping/jumping, just make the distance you hop proportional to how much endurance you have left. If you have 0 endurance you CAN'T HOP! If have full, you hop full. So you get 1 maybe 2 bunny hops and then you're dead on the ground.

You know, he's right. Stats have led to stat-padding, and awards have led to players stacking sides, or doing silly things like commanding while driving a boat in circles or sitting in an AA emplacement, so they can get some stupid ribbon, badge or medal.

Even more amazing is to see entire ranked servers (Pistol/Knife), whose sole purpose is to allow losers to achieve little shiny badges that they can't get the legitimate way. The medals and badges have become the game for too many people, instead of playing the game to have some fun. It's kinda sad.

I believe you left out the biggest ****off of them all the TKPUNISH/TK SYSTEM!

1st of all making it mandatory for all ranked servers to run this flawed system was a big mistake. I understand its intention as an auto-admin, but its so flawed and people who pay big money for ranked servers should have the right to decide whether they want to run it or not.

                    Suggestions:
A plane rams your chopper and the pilot tk's the co-pilot or if your in the BH you tk the 5 occupants and that's an instant 1 round ban. That should never happen. The pilot of the heli didn't do anything to the co-pilot. Please remove this from the tkpunish and tk system. Same applies to when a co-pilot bails and dies and the pilot gets a tk and usually a punish as well.

Standing in front of jets/helis on takeoff earns the pilot a tk and a punish. Again surely this was never your intention, please fix this!

A jeep runs into a tank and the tank driver gets team vehicle damage, a tk and a punish to go along with it. Not the tank drivers fault, they move so slow and guys in jeeps just can't seem to drive.

Above all fix the tk/tkpunish system or allow admins to choose whether or not they want to use it!

Also on the voting system. Use the voting system from BFV. It actually worked and I can't for the life of me understand why it wasn't used in BF2. Give admins the rights to decide what vote % level they can set for the vote system for both the server and the team. So if one team is trying to kick someone, it doesn't require the other team to vote and doesn't require such an extreme % of votes to get that player kicked.

 BF2142 will have some 48 unlocks and they've said it'll be even harder than BF2 to earn them all, stat tracking will be even more extreme with the ability to collect the dog tags off of people you kinfe. Even Quakewars will track stats, it won't have an unlock system but it'll have stat tracking.

what makes you think that 2142 is going to have better support? After a while they will announce another battlefield game and they will start destroying 2142 aswell anyway.

Sad it's not done. I suppose it can't be eliminated in a game where it is existing . But the stamina thing sounds like a reasonable compromise.
