Qs about Fraps

Hey fellers,

I have downloaded Fraps, and I do love it. I am planning to make a fifteen to twenty minute video teaching people how to be good ground-pounders. However, a single 30 second video takes 526MB of diskspace and a twenty minute one would be in the GBs.

Is there another program? Or can I fix this? Thanks for any help!

In the settings of FRAPS there should be an option to choose quality/resolution.

Choosing Half-size will store the movie at half the resolution of the game screen. Full-size will store the movie at the same resolution as the game screen up to 1152x864.

You can choose the frame rate of the output movie from 25fps, 30fps, 50fps, 60fps, or a custom value up to 100fps. Higher values result in smoother playback but will increase the file size. Some video editing programs will treat movies recorded at 25fps as PAL, and those captured at 29.97/30fps as NTSC.

FRAPs saves files uncompressed, so you cant change the file size. Once you put it all through an editor it will be like 5 % of the original size, so dont worry about it.

You would not be able to play the game if fraps would compress the video, and audio source in real-time.
Use tmpegEnc, Virtual-Dub etc. to maker to make the movie smaller. But do it only after you have cut/edited the movie with your movie editor.
I also recommend recording to a separate dedicated HDD so that you have the least performance impact on your system/game HDD as possible.

if you have the space then record but a 30 minute movie would be a huge file. In the default. If you have to lower the resulution but know that once using virtual dub and any codec. it will be a tiny fraction of that size

also make sure to use half-size in the video recording options of Fraps.

Lowering game resolution did not have any noticable impact on performance while using fraps for me.

You have to have the registered version for FRAPS to auto compress it.

Sorry but I have to say that this is not correct. Compression does not work with the registered version either.
Fraps will NOT compress your files in real-time. It would take far too much processing power to do that.

Capture a round or two, and remember to have enough disk-space. Lower the settings if it becomes too big. Then go into Premiere (or whatever) and edit it... Not so hard...
