The fastest way would be to unplug it.

Otherwise, it is what it is.

My experiences with hard drives is somewhat dated, but decent. I sold them from 1987 till 1998. What you can do depends on what kind of noise we are talking about. Is it vibrating? Then yes. Does it just sound like someone is scratching a chalkboard? Then no.

Some hard drives are just garbage (no offense) and make noise. In the case of Rodime (years ago) it was faulty lubrication on the spindle mechanism that lead to a sudden increase in noise and shortly thereafter, a horrible sounding death of the drive. The catastrophic failure rate of that line lead to the horrible sounding death of the whole company.

Yeah, you just need a new drive. That sounds like a Maxtor to me. They are notorious for making noise and failing. Get a Western Digital. You can get an 80gb for like 40 dollars nowadays.

Maxtor has a drive to drive copy software that comes with their drive. I'm not sure about WD or other companies. You wouldn't need to buy a new copy of windows. You could use your current copy. If you don't have a legal copy of windows, this is not the forum to be asking questions of that type.

Same as above post. Stick to Maxtor drive. It has the utility that can do what you need.
