Can someone please tell me whats wrong with this picture

Please check this out. I have two pictures here that show before and after screenshots of an arty strike. The first picture (if you cant read it) says 15fps and the second picture (AFTER the strike) is 70fps. Please have a look and tell me what you think.

    My settings (specs on sig):
    Effects/Lighting/Terrain/Dynamics/ = MEDIUM
    2x AA
    1024x768 @ 75hz
    the rest on high (texture/filtering/geometry)

Note: I editted it in paint to JPEG format so I could host it. sorry for poor quality.

    DURING ARTY STRIKE:

    AFTER:

Edit: I believe all my drivers are up to date.
Could this be happening because of my onboard sound raping my CPU? (My sound settings are on LOW and EAX off)

err. i really couldnt tell you but ill take a shot by saying maybe it has something to do with viewdistace, although i dont believe that might be it as all you are looking at in the 2nd pic is mostly calm waters

I also get a massive drop in fps while being close to arty, I don't know why though

You get a drop in FPS during Arti and explosions etc as theres a whole load of stuff happening on yoru screen that your CPU/GPU has to display and calculate for you so thats why your FPS will drop...

Why you would got from 70fps to 15 and back again is beyond me to be honest, it could be anything to do with server lag, net lag, graphics up too high or a range of other things...

sorry i can't be more help though and good luck sorting it out!

Could buying an X-FI xtremeMusic card give me some sort of a boost do you think?

im gona give a simple answer here as i dont have much time right now for a mreo detailed answer.

the reason this is happening is because when your near the arty, the game is drawing more instances of textures for the dust effects which eats up texture memory and gpu time. plus you have the extra sounds playing, though i doubt it has as much of an impact on performance as the textures. the same thing that happens with the arty is possible when you shoot a gun at the ground in some games. i would put all your settings on medium and turn off dynamic lights and shadows. you should also try just setting the game back to the default settings from when you first installed the game.

In some way yes, getting better soundcards will make your FPS go up if you run the same sound settings.

I think ThIrD-Eye has got it right. The artry effect is always going to eat hardware and you should set your options so that it runs at decent fps when there is a lot of action on the screen.

Well im already running the lowest sound settings possible.

I guess you're saying that even if i bought a high end sound card and cranked up my settings my CPU will still be working extra hard for the sound?

The only thing I see wrong is you holding an AT when there is no tank around.

ey you've got an X-fi. aside from the massive sound improvement did you see any performance gains? has the sound card help take the load off your cpu?

No, because I went from a bucket to my dream PC with an Audigy. Then from to a X-Fi, so anything above good was an amazment for me.

Yes, sound is amazing and arty does take alot from a system. My GFX seems to handle anything BF2 throws at me. You can try upgrading the X-FI and maybe save up for the G80, and the X-Fi is worth it.

I got lucky and bought it of Creative for $80

As mentioned the answer is fairly simple, when there's an artillery strike and your looking at it your CPU & GPU have to calculate and display a heck of a lot of more information than usual, its happening because Artilary uses a lot of partical effects, turning it on low should show an improvement.

I hope 2142 isn't going to be like this.
I deserve to play medium-high with my system I think. Oh well, ill buy a sound card cause I wanna hear BF2 and my music in detail anyways.

Same engine so expect it to require the same system requirement or probably a little more.
