when overclocking with CCC

Ok i am currently using the auto overclock with me x1900xt and was curious to see if i have to have CCC loaded for my overclocks to work ? I set it so it will auto overclock when 3D images come up but how can i check the clock (or is it auto even when not loaded at windows start up) ?

I just read that is a discontinued program and mainly used for Nvidia cards.
