Could this work to stop cheating?

Steam has this implemented and it seems to be an evergrowing list of idiot cheaters that are caught. It works by making an ingame demo of the suspected cheater, along with various screenshots or the player ID, etc.. It is then submitted and analyzed by various "staff" members for legitimacy, etc. If verified as a cheat, the player is placed on a ban list used by participating server owners. The result is that cheater would not be able to play on a protected server with that same ID he was caught with.

So if BFROE for exaple headed up a program similar to this for all BF series games would it work? Could you see it working to at least slow cheating down? What do you think? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Not really. In CSS it's possible because you can record first-person demos, while in BF2, You're limited to watching everything unfold in the third person. There's no way of telling if they're hacking or not, and what they're seeing.

Also, when they look over the demos, it's simply a group of people, just like you and I, sitting there analyzing how they play. Some may be quick to call cheater and be very biased, it won't be true and factual. If they watched my demos, they may even call me a hacker because I continuously wall the fences and anything you can shoot through until I get an "X" and the kill.

Steam's VAC is a bit different to Punkbuster which sucks big time at detecting hackers. VAC is a built-in feature and actually works. In BF you can't spectate or record demos the way you can with Source engine. Here's one CS:S cheater. You can't see thing like that in BF and if you could, you can never tell if he was just good. IMO BF desperately needs first person spectator mode. There's one huge difference between Source and BF2. Half-Life was made with passion and enthusiasm, as BF2 was made for money. They'll never be the same.

BTW. VAC doesn't set tight restrictions. It allows custom (coloured) models and allows you to change too many variables to count to improve gamplay.

They do the same thing for hackers on Americas Army, and it works well, all clan servers update the ban list every month or so, works well. BUt then again, AA uses the CS engine.

Nothing will ever stop cheating. However Punkbuster could be doing a hell of a better job if they'd just hire more staff to find cheats, update the PB code, and update more often.

On a related note I ran in to a player about a week ago I'm 100% absolutely positive was using a wallhack of some sort. Yeah, getting shot with sniper like precision through the tin fences by an APC is no fun. The funny thing is this player went from slight above average at best (from the last time I'd seen him) to some sort of APC god in about the space of 3 days. He'll eventually be banned I'm sure, but how many hundreds of games will he wreck and months will pass before punkbuster finally drops the mass ban which includes his GUID?

For now, you're ONLY protection against cheaters is finding a server with 24/7 mature admins that check ALL of the high scoring/suspect players with the Punkbuster screenshot feature for anything that looks odd. If you find this mythical server, please let me know.

Re: Could this work to stop cheating?

No idea why you think punkbuster is useless, it bans the lets say ''the muppets'' the ones who dowload a public hack made by someone who coded it, they go in a server and get banned. However you then have the actual coder, who makes a hack for themself and friends meaning pb cannot download it and add it to their database. So if everyone just made their own hacks then yeah pb would be useless.

Coders always work around restrictions, hardware spoofers, screenshot blockers (for against pb) etc.

And Punkbuster can just be a pain in the ass, I got kicked by pb for trying to film in a server with game cam lite, said multiple 3D something.

And whoever said BF2 was made for money and Steam was made with passion and enthusiasm, rofl. What a ignorant comment. Valve are charging their customers $20 a piece for each HL2 episode which only lasts like 3 hours, and they will release no doubt 20 of them, so more money. Besides their tech support is and they don't have a tech support phone number, which is hahahaah, why? because I see on the back of food tins it says ''Call this number (# here) freephone to give comments and questions'' now they have a FREEPHONE number which Valve would never have even if they did have a number to call.

A companies aims are to make a profit and to provide a service, not make a product just out of passion LOL. The difference I can see between EA and Valve, are at least EA don't include unwanted software that you HAVE! to use to initiate products that you have bought.

Re: Could this work to stop cheating?

I recently read a thread that stated that you can enter a command in console and record a demo, independently of battlecorder I am guessing.
I understand that nothing will ever stop cheating, that is why I stated "slow down" and not "stop".
I think it would be a step in the right direction for someone, be it BF2rankedservers.com or bfroe.com to atleast entertain the idea of something like this. It just might give PB the kick in the ass it so rightly deserves.

Again PB are limited in their services. Are cheaters annoying you that bad? if I see one in a server then so be it, the admin will find out sooner or later, but I don't say 'CHEATER!' because its most likely that they are just a good player, but detecting a cheater is BF2 is damn hard, unless its plain obvious, but if someone is wallhacking its kind of hard to tell.

When I used to play Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, there was a software bundle which was coded and did work %100 for the longest time. It took about 9 months for someone to finally hack it. And you KNOW they started from day one.

It was the combination of Matchwatch (serverside), which would act as a constant monitor and admin control panel; and Reverand (clientside) which would be used to connect to the server, while also checking the contents of EVERY game file and setting. It would take a long time to load but was well worth it. Matchwatch would also scan users every 30 seconds to stop people from launching a cheat/hack AFTER the game was already loaded.

If Matchwatch detected a cheater, it would automatically take various screenshots (their model, what they see, their config files through the console, skin selections, and added a graphic to their screen which would be distorted when a SS was taken with it in it. At the same time, it would kick, ban that IP and name. You even had the option of closing their game on them causing them to CTD. It was great...:)

Anyway, they should really have something like this implimented into BF2.

Re: Could this work to stop cheating?

Cheaters don't really bother me. I admin a ranked server for the clan I am in, so do 15 other members on our BF2 side of the group. I also tend to play only on the servers in my favorites for the most part.
I just thought I would start that topic since it's one of a few items that has not been covered. I thought people would probably be interested to maybe try talking about something different.
Aside form you guys that posted in here, it seems that the rst of the "world" is quite content screaming "CHEATER" as you put it...

That sounds like it would be a pretty damn good start to it though. I've heard of matchwatch but I never really got too much involved in MOH. I was sorely disappointed in Americas Army though when the cheating got severely out of hand. I guess CS has always been my "fall back" game. If something get boring or overrun by cheating or whatever, CS is the "staple" game for a lot of people I know.
